33rd Annual Yucaipa Invitational - Yucaipa HS - 3.0 mile course that runs very similar timewise to old Mt. SAC coures - 15-30 seconds slower than new Mt. SAC course - Sat 10/5/02 Humberto Rojas (Estancia) presses ahead towards his strong 15:50 winner on a very hot mid-day The second individual Estancia winner of the day was Humberto Rojas, with the 4:14.78 1600 track star handling the heat very well here in a well-paced effort! After he was ready quickly to talk about his race, "I was back a bit at the start. I was in the back of our team pack getting some water when the gun went off, so I had a pretty bad position there. My goal was to be under 16:00 here, which I was able to do. It is always hot here, and this is actually the coolest weather yet that our team has run in here. Last year I was the Southern Section Divisional Champ, and 5th in State. My goal this year is to win state. I am headed for Orange Coast College, then hope to continue my running at a four year school."
Jorge Duran (San Jacinto) leads early in Boys Div III Humberto Rojas (Estancia) moves into lead on the big hills Off the hills the first time Rojas is the leader By the time they came off the hills the second time after the mile Rojas had broken cleanly away Desert Christian's Tim Smith - 2nd 16:20 and Sky Johnston 3rd - 16:25 ran strong Jorge Duran (San Jacinto) makes the turn on to the track - he was 4th at 16:34 Alex Cahuantzi (Estancia) 5th 16:35 Boys Div III
