33rd Annual Yucaipa Invitational - Yucaipa HS - 3.0 mile course that runs very similar timewise to old Mt. SAC coures - 15-30 seconds slower than new Mt. SAC course - Sat 10/5/02
1-2 finishers Jared Zurn (Burroughs, Ridgecrest) 15:52 and Martin Cedeno (Serrano, Phelan) 15:54 head on to the track - one of the State's best teams, Barstow, gives a lesson in team tactics and dominating racing, steadily moving up through the pack (here with 5 in view from 8th place on at about a mile and a half) totalling 33 points with some very impressive running. Their 81:05 team time would show the ability to average 16:13 at Woodward Park right now for five, tough to deal with! Jared Zurn (Burroughs, Ridgecrest) junior winner - "Martin Cedeno and I are in the same league and race all the time, so I tried to stay as close to him as I can. My goal here today was to run 15:50. I was back at the mile in about 15th place, and really tried to move strong the final 800. Last year I was 9th in the Southern Section and 16th in State. My goals this year are to break 15:40 at Mt. SAC and 16:00 minutes at Woodward, and see what places those earn me." Barstow's lead pack (and La Sierra's eventual 4-5 finishers Matt Kern and Danny Guy) sat about 20th at the 800 mark Barstow moves to the outside of the pack (maroon shorts) and starts their move up the two tough hills on the course Serrano's Cedeno leads off the first hill The Barstow pack continues their relentless move up through the pack at the mile Places 4th through 10th at the mile and a half feature La Sierra's Kern and Guy who have made a big move, with the Barstow pack not far behind
With their scoring five between about places 8th and 17th Barstow is now in control of the contest Barstow's Himes would finish 3rd, with La Sierra's Kern and Guy 4-5 - Joey Sena (Barstow) in rear would be 6th Joey Sena leads Barstow runner's 3-4-5 on to the track (all would be under 16:20!) Coach Jim Duarte of Barstow after another great team effort Boys Div II
