Yucaipa Invitational - Boys Division I - 10/05/02 - Results, Interview, Pictures

33rd Annual Yucaipa Invitational - Yucaipa HS - 3.0 mile course that runs very similar timewise to old Mt. SAC coures - 15-30 seconds slower than new Mt. SAC course - Sat 10/5/02

Mohamed Trafeh (Duarte) finishes his 15:03 #2 All-Time on the course behind Ryan Hall (Big Bear) and his CR of 14:52 run in early November in the League Finals here - weather excellent for both contests - Mohamed and Coach Nick LaCapria after event

Great race here marred by a spill just before the mile to Mike Poe, the 4:12 1600 runner from Etiwanda. We watched Mike put on his flat soled racing flats, and the combination of loose dirt and a hard packed dirt trail or cement and a near 180 degree turn before athletes headed up a road towards the mile mark would be a real combination for minor tragedy. When talked to after the race, Trafeh was very aware of the quality of competition, stating, "Last year here Poe and Tom Whelan (East Valley) really ran hard on the first hill and they pulled away from me. This year I did not feel really good before the race start, but I knew I had to stay with Poe, and this year I would try to put some gap between myself and him on the hill. The course was very tough, and my time here helps to think I can go under 15:00 at Mt. SAC. The back of my leg, just below my knee in the calf was sore from running hard on the downhills here. I felt my performance last week at Stanford was a bit better than this, and my time there worked out very close to people who have been to the Foot Locker Nationals before, so I was very pleased. My goal is to make the Foot Locker Nationals." When we discussed the grassy and hill course used in the past for that competition Mohamed seemed excited, stating that is a combination he loves. He does a great deal of training barefoot on grass, and showed real strength on the hills here.

Trafeh and Mike Poe lead the race through 800m

Trafeh, sticking with his strategy, starts to pull away a bit up the first steep hill

Off the first hill on the course Mohamed had moved to a 40 meter lead

In second here, this was the last we would see of Mike as he took his spill soon after

It was "off to the races" with no one in sight as they came off the hill the second time after the mile

Mike Powers (Santa Margarita) (left) and Jess Mirola (Norwalk) woudl finish 2-3 at 15:29 and 15:36

The clock read 14:45 with about 100 meters to go for Trafeh, with the CR 14:52 by Ryan Hall

Joel Cota lead the Indio team winners with his 15:47 4th place effort
