Humboldt Del Norte League Meet - NCS - McKinleyville - 10/3/02 sstoz tes

1610h-1720h 03 october 2002; mckinleyville; 290°K, misty; unmeasured (estimated 4,6km), flat, 3km asphalt, 16hm dirt

girls: yasmine white (arcata (d. 4), gr. 9), just off her 13th place 20:13 in the d. 4 race at the stanford invitational, showed her dominance of the far north coast in winning by 00:58 over teammate molly hoch, arresting the chronometers at 18:12 (3:57/km) over this often road-race like 46hm (approximate) course. white's comrades also left little in doubt, taking 7 of the 1st 11 slots to compile a team-time of 97:31 (around 106 minutes for 5km, all things remaining the same (which they don't), well ahead of eureka's (d. 2) 104:43. unfortunately, the h.-d.n.l., an agglomeration of 10 schools spread out over a 13 000 square km area, could muster no more than 30 female runners, with only 2 full teams. fully 57% of those runners come from 1 school (arcata), much to coach james washington's credit.

boys: the state rankings in d. 5 may soon have to account for neophyte lang-laufer aaron magazzi (ferndale (d. 5), gr. 11), who sat in a pack of five through 3km, then followed kevin kiniery's (del norte (d. 3), gr. 12) surge over the 16hm trail portion of race, easily surpassing kiniery (14:58 (3:15/km)) in the final 2 hectometers. magazzi's 14:51 (3:14/km) was impressive, especially given his strength in the last km over a quality field. john figueiredo (arcata (d. 4), gr. 10), who showed great strength in running 15:49 (3rd place) in the d. 4 race at stanford, had an off day in crossing the line in 15:07 (3:17/km), followed closely by eureka's improved spien komak (15:10 (3:18/km). arcata (d. 4, state rank no. 10), bridesmaid to eureka's dominating teams since the late '90s, asserted itself as the team to beat in the h.-d.n.l., accumulating a scant 76:50, roughly equivalent to 83:30 over 5km (read caveat above for a brief aside on such spurious extrapolations). most impressive for arcata was the 00:31 gap between their no. 1 & no. 5 runners, with huge improvement for the 2-5 slots. eureka came in a clear 2nd with 83:47. the next h.-d.n.l. meet will be held at eureka's tri-loop, acclivity intensive 5,0km course (this one measured, (with a wheel no less!)) on 10 october 2002.
