Rubidoux pack leads Sunkist League Meet - Brad Peters photo

The Sunkist League met on Wednesday for the first of three league meets. Defending Division 2 CIF and State Champion Rubidoux looked good, but for the first time since joining the league two years ago, opposing runners were able to place in top six Rubidoux runners. Only once in the past two years had an opposing league school crack that barrier. Though Rubidoux came out victorious in this contest, the scene was strikingly different than what many observors had seen take place in years' past.

A tight group of Falcons led the charge at the mile, coming in just under 5:00. However, King's David Lee and a company of teammates along with Norte Vista's Francisco Manzo were right there. In the middle mile that Falcon group splintered a bit, and with 1000 meters to go, Jon MacLaughlin and David Lee of King were running 3-5 overall, with Manzo at 6. Stirring finishes brought places 2-6 across the line in a span of just 3 seconds. Rubidoux won with 24 points, King placed second with 42 and Norte Vista was third with 65.

The girls' contest was not quite as dramatic, with King's pack taking the lead in the first mile with Bloomington's quickly improving sophomore, Christine Oliva (sub 19:00 at Colton Swarm the opening weekend) and Norte Vista's Yessenia Cortez going with the pace. Though Bloomington and Norte Vista put their top-two in the top-five places, the day belonged to King, led by a vastly improved Megan Fairley who won the race in a lifetime best of 19:05. King would eventually put all five scorers in the top 10. King finished with 32 points, Norte Vista had 50 and Bloomington had 65.
