Not to be denied, Becky Cummins took charge and opened up a gap in the third mile, finishing in 18:40. Just after, two of the three sub-16 times on the course came, as Sean Defilippo fought off an challenge by Anthony Martinez of St. John Bosco (16:08), Sultana's Joe Schofield (16:15) and Valley Christian's Nick Chen (15:51), finishing in 15:39 and the fastest time of the day. The freshman were next to hit the grueling course. On the girls side, Holly Rogers of Brea Olinda (19:42) went out with Sultana's Danielle Vanela, yet Vanela's awesome 18:35 performance was too much for Rogers as she fell of of Vanela, but hung on for a second place finish. The boys side provided some real excitement as freshman sensation Jonathan Batres, who has already broken 16 this season, looked to head to a comfortable victory up front, yet that would not be the case. Danielle Clifford of Lakewood and Robert Peck and Jesse Morrill of Marina, all running against one another at the Millikan Invitational the week prior, made a charge during the middle of the race to put pressure on Batres, who ended up opening it up with a solid finish in 16:18 followed by Peck (16:31), Morrill (16:32) and Clifford (16:32)! In what was expected to be the best race of the day, the Kim twins, Claire and Stacy, were able to finish one-two (18:18, 18:33) in a great race that had the fastest time of the day, Claire Kim, and the most dipping under the 19 minute mark. The junior boys race was also as exciting as a pack of six held strong through two miles. A mishap at that point spread the pack out a bit. Glendora finished three juniors in the top four - 16:08-16:13-16:23. In the final races of the day, the sophomore girls race started with three running strong up front, with a couple not too far behind. Anne Gustafson of Brea Olinda and Shadee Duarte of Sultana put some distance between themselves and a group led by Alexis Dawkins of St. Joseph's. Gustafson (18:26)ended up opening up the gap to a one minute margin, most of which was gained in the second half of the race. On the sophomore boys side, the team title was at stake, as St. John Bosco trailed Glendora going into the race. Servite's Nick Mosey (15:54) was able to hold of Randy Skillens of St. John Bosco (16:05) for the victory. Unfortunately for St. John Bosco, the gap was not large enogh over Jason Simon of Glenora (16:55) to seal the deal, as Glendora took the team title, joining Sultana and Corona del Mar. NOTES Sultana ran in the 96 minute range, which was impressive on this course. Glendora's boys also ran well to a impressive team victory. The course is ran on thick grass, dirt paths and bike trails, however, the thick grass, multiple sharp turns (some nearly U-turns) and the hills, slow runners down .
