Metro League CC Meet - Sac Joaquin Section - Seymore Park - Chuck Bruns - Woodland HS

Wednesday, September 18, 2002
Results from Metro League (sjs) cross-county meet at Seymore Park (home course of Kennedy High School (Sacramento)

Overview and comments: With Woodland, Nevada Union and Yuba City coming into the “new” metro league to join Johnson, Grant, Kennedy and CK McClatchy great anticipation filled the unhealthy and 95 degree temperature day air. On a slow and flat course, a seemingly well-balanced collection of well-trained teams placed their proverbial toes on the early season fitness testing line. Showing great team depth and savvy racing skills was the Miners of Nevada Union who claimed the both the Varsity and Frosh/soph boys divisions. A solid group of junior Nevada Union boys grabbed 5 of the top 11 spots to score their 27 point victory over an outdistanced Kennedy and Woodland with 62 and 72 points respectively. Matt Freitas (Jr.) narrowly out-leaned last year’s sophomore section cross-country champion Paul Magaletti in a time of 16:42. Nevada Union boys look tough this year and should indeed factor into the finals at Sierra College in November.

On the girls varsity side, past two year state meet competitors Woodland (10th place in 2001) held off a strong challenge from Nevada Union’s pack to win with 31 points to the Miners 2nd place score of 39 points. Yuba City was a distant third with 80 points. Fresh off her Lagoon Valley win last Saturday, Senior Megan Cearley (19:04) easily handled the field and pulled teammates Mariya Townswick (19:22) and Melyndee Butterfield (19:52) to 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Ana Estrada, Brenda Rodriguez and Annie Hehner finished out the 3 mile course in 11th, 14th, and 15th places respectively.

The Woodland Wolves will compete at the Nevada Union Invitational this Saturday and return to Stanford next Saturday.

As it was back to school night and there were problems with results, results that are more detailed were not available to Coach Bruns upon departure to Woodland High School.
