Rio Mesa star Philip Reid - Seaside Invite "Fastest of Day"

An absolutely stunning team performance, one of the huge “coming
out” efforts in State history, marked the Seaside Invitational in
Ventura Friday, September 12th, as Canyon (Canyon Country) unveiled a
Girls team that averaged 18:04 for five runners on a flat, fast bike path
course. With possibly the finest ninth grade group in State History that
went 17:48-17:51-19:14-19:32 and 19:35 through five, Canyon added 18:21
- 17:58 - 18:23 - 18:31 - 18:53 as you moved up the age-groups to produce
a stunning squad certainly worthy of national ranking!!! The 90:19 team
time left a very solid Royal (Simi Valley) group nearly three minutes
back at 93:15 (18:39 average). Katie Gose (La Reina, Thousand Oaks), a
10:51 3200m runner, had the day’s quickest clocking in her 17:34
win over Lauren Morales (Oak Park) 17:54. The Canyon frosh duo of Brenda
Cohen and Courtney Granger (who ran 4:51 at this summer’s National
JO’s for 1500 meters) was 17:48 and 17:51 in the frosh event for
#2 and #3 of the day!!! Jessica Locke, who raced 4:43 for 1500 meters
a couple of years back, is also listed on the Canyon roster, with somehow
the group possibly working out to have the best ever JV group (numbers
8-12) in Golden State history!!
On the Boys’ side it was Philip Reid (Rio Mesa) with the day’s
quickest individual clocking in his senior race win, as the 4:12 1600
star took Tim Hearst (Royal) 14:46 and the Canyon duo of Ryan Morgan (14:48)
and Troy Werner (14:49) in that race! Canyon was 77:22 (15:28 per runner),
with Royal next at 78:00. Some interesting divisional match-ups took place
for the rankings, with Div IV powers Oak Park, McFarland, and Fillmore
tangling on the team time watch. McFarland surprisingly was quickest at
79:01, with Fillmore 80:01, and Oak Park 80:56 for five. With over two
months until the State Meet it will be interesting how things will develop.
