Boys Varsity:
David Aubuchon (Wilcox) took the lead from 300 meters and held it thru
the mile but during the second Green' it was shown that 'pack running'
is the way to go as the two from Mitty and the two from Cupertino both
passed him. With 400 meters to go, Marini (Mitty) had the lead and teammate
Verbugge had to hold off a surge from McDonough (Cupertino) to hold on
to 2nd place. Aubuchon finished in 5th.
Mitty took the unofficial team title but if Los Gatos had moved their
winning JV'er and one of their F/S boys up to Varsity, it might have been
close. Cupertino showed some real promise and trounced home team Lynbrook
for the FUHSD honors.
Girls Varsity
McKayla Plank, Soph from Mitty, had the race well in hand by the 880
mark (10 yard lead). She went thru the mile a good 50-60 yards in front
of the pack of 3 Los Gatos runners and the 1 Lynbrook lady. As everyone
was waiting for her to re-appear for her 2nd lap around the green, only
the Los Gatos and Lynbrook runner came thru... what happened to Plank.
Instead of going around the 'Green' for her second time, she headed back
out towards the finishing section of the course. By the time Plank re-appeared
into view, she was 440 yards from the finish - it was too late to double
back and try to play catch-up, so she just ran to the finish, ran around
the 'Green' (to get the full 2.1 miles in) and called it a day without
finishing. By far she is in tip-top shape and will be one of the CCS top
runners.
As it turned out, the pack from Los Gatos went 1-2-3-5-7 with only Wakabayashi
(Lynbrook) and Boyle (Homestead) being able to break them up. At 2 miles
Frosh sensation Christine 'Cobbie' Jones madeher move and pulled away
from teammate Carolyn Penner (Penner displayed 'wheels' last year in the
800 2:14 and Jones outkicked her!). Los Gatos easily won the team title
- if they were keeping score but
Lynbrook has made a case to now be ranked in the CCS Top 15 by beating
both Mitty and Saratoga - unofficially, that is. Check out the results
from the JV Girls race as Los Gatos and Lynbrook both have young ladies
ready to move up to the Varsity ranks.
