Buchanan Day Declared by Cross-Country President!!! Casey Burchill wins Univ Colorado Trial - Kyle Alcorn cranks 19:51 4 mile at Fresno!!! 8/31/02 weekend

The first weekend of the Collegiate Cross-Country season features current and graduate of Buchanan HS (Clovis) - Grad Burchill at University of Colorado and Kyle Alcorn (competing unattached) at Fresno State Watermelon run star!!!

Competing as a first year Collegian with the program at the University of Colorado, Casey Burchill shocked with a win in the Time Trial race for the #1 Ranked Collegiate program in the nation!!! Buchill sprinted in just ahead of Jorge Torres (2nd in last year's NCAA Division I Finals!!!). Casey raced 26:26 for the 8k race (which is a 5:14 1600 pace for five times that distance) at Boulder's altitude. It is obvious that Torres and others have and can run the distance faster, but the win in the #1 Ranked in the nation Buffalo program is a stunner!!! Casey was 14th in State last year Division I Cross-Country at the California prep level, with a 16th in the State Track Meet over 3200m. He was 9:16.36 for the 8 lap distance. Coach Mark Wetmore, obviously one of the nation's guru's was quoted, "I knew he looked good in training, but he looked even better than he had all summer." Billy Nelson (graduate Taft HS Central Section) was 14th at 27:46 (5:33 per 1600 for five of them back to back at altitude). Dathan Ritznehein did not run in the trial, resting an IT (knee) problem, with Brent Schoolmasters (sub 8:50 in the Arcadia 3200 last year for a Denver private high school) was 7th, a second behind the winning Burchill.

Competing "unattached" at the Cal State Fresno Watermelon run just before the start of school, current Buchanan HS athlete, Kyle Alcorn, blazed 19:51 for four miles in chasing former Buchanan star Fernando Cabada, now a transfer from the University of Arkansas to CS Fresno, who won the annual time-trial race at 19:30. This 4:57-8 pace per 1600 for four full miles for Kyle certainly shows a level of conditioning that is very, very high, and bodes for some good things this Fall harrier season. Kyle closed out track with a huge kick that won the State 3200m last June at 9:00.46.

On the Women's side in the University of Colorado trial, frosh Christine Bolf (Notre Dame Academy, Los Angeles) impressed with her third place as the Buffalo Women's group, running together, allowed the front pack to finish in grade order (Zeigle twins who were from Bingham HS in Utah went 1-2).

Meanwhile, over at the Air Force Academy, Lindsey Grose (former Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo star) battles for a spot in the AFA Top seven with a sixth place finish in the Air Force Open Meet. Other Californians dot the roster there, with Travis Patterson (Royal, Simi Valley) 25th in the Men's race

Casey Burchill (former Buchanan HS of Clovis star) wins Univ of Colorado (#1 Ranked team in nation) time trial!!!

Cross Rosters Finalized At Time Trial
Freshmen Win Both Races
Aug. 31, 2002
Boulder - The defending national champion Colorado men's cross country team started, and finished, in a pack, as did the Buff women in CU's Open/Alumni/Time Trial, but with 25 meters to run, the women broke down into age order, with the freshmen in front, thereby allowing freshmen twins Laura and Jackie Zeigle (both running unattached) to finish first and second, respectively, at the Buffalo Ranch on CU's South Campus here Saturday morning.
Both finished the women's 5,800-m race in 22:42, while in the men's race, freshman Casey Burchill (also running unattached) sprinted to the finish, just ahead of two-time All-American Jorge Torres, both crossing the finish of the men's 8k in a relaxed 26:26.
"It was a really good race," said Laura Zeigle (just 15 minutes younger than Jackie). "We stayed close together and worked together, and Mark (Wetmore) told us to follow Molly (Austin) and Sara (Gorton), then right before the finish we decided to finish youngest to oldest."
So the women finished with the Zeigles, Christine Bolf, Natalie Florence and Sara Gorton (all in 22:43), Tera Moody and Molly Austin (both in 22:44), the predicted top seven. One second behind Burchill and Torres were Steve Slattery, Jared Scott and Ed Torres in 26:27, Payton Batliner (26:39), Brett Schoolmeester (26:59) and Andy Knutsen (27:00) to round out the top eight finishers. Sophomore Jon Severy finished 11th in 27:16, Austin Baillie (12th/27:44), Billy Nelson (14th/27:46) , Matt McCue and Bryan Dillon in 18th and 19th, respectively, finishing in 28:13 and 28:20.
With 66 runners between both races finishing, this morning's annual "rite of passage" marked the official end of preseason workouts, and the beginning of the 2002 season. With the varsity squads identified, walk-on hopefuls accepted and the '02 rosters nearly finalized, the season will begin with the Buffs' "B" teams competing Sept. 14 at the Colorado State Invitational in Fort Collins, and the both the varsity and "B" teams running Homecoming weekend, Oct. 5, at CU's Rocky Mountain Shootout."
"We got out of this what we came here for, " said Wetmore. "We identified the varsity roster and identified the total roster. There are always pleasant surprises, and one or two disappointments in this race. Today was no different."
"The freshmen girls looked good with three (the Zeigles and walk-on Christine Bolf) in the top seven," he said. Wetmore's surprise of the day was Burchill's performance. A walk-on freshman from Clovis, Calif., "I knew he looked good in training, but he looked even better than he had all summer."
Sophomore Dathan Ritzenhein (who finished fourth at the NCAA Championships a year ago) was held out of this morning's race with an iliotibial band (IT) injury, as was freshman Erika Odlaug, with a posterior tibialis tendonitis injury. Both are expected to be in uniform Oct. 5 and were held out this morning for precaution.
With one position to fill on the men's team, the following are the rosters for the 2002 Colorado cross country season:
