Buchanan Distance Carnival
Friday, February 22nd, 2008

With a new stadium where they are lobbying to hold a state meet in the middle of California, Buchanan HS in Clovis was
"track headquarters" for a weekend with Central Section action opening the sport this weekend in February.  The forecast of rain proved true, with the day obviously becoming wetter and wetter as they day went along, with the paper results tough to even come by late in the afternoon for the Girls and Boys 3200.

The Section has some fine distance folks with some decent efforts despite the conditions.  Defending Section 400 and 800 Champ Ashlee Thomas (Centennial, Bakersfield) was 2:29.5 for the day's quickest 2 lapper on the Girls' side, with Anthony Mitchell (North, Bakersfield), a 49.81 400 runner in 2007, stepping up to the 800 with a solid 1:59.4 two second win.  Allison Gonzales (Exeter) was the Girls 1600 winner at 5:22.9, then came back with an 11:47.4 runner-up effort in the 3200 to sub 10:40 star Meghan Marvin (Clovis), 11:41.2 while cruising in the puddles this day.  The hosts' Jonathan Sanchez took the Boys 3200 at 4:32.0.

Clovis High School Sprint Carnival
Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

A cool, overcast Saturday at Buchanan HS had Edison High School shining, with eight (of ten) possible sprint relay victories, with Boys 43.00 (4x100)  and 3:27.3 (4x400) and Girl 50.09 (4x1) and 4:11.1 (4x4) showing the core of squads that will certainly hope to place higher than the thirds that both achieved in the 2007 Section Finals as overall squads. Defending Section Girls 100 Hurldes Champ Brianny Williams (Edison) added 16.30 and 50.07 Girls' hurdle wins to the Tigers' medal haul this day.  Kenny Phillips (Central, Fresno) had a fine 6-06 HJ win to lead field event action, with the usual area Boys weight quality in evidence, with Niko Gomes (Clovis) 156-08 Discus to take Clovis West star Travis Smith (156-04) and Fowler soph Jacob Budwig (150-01), and Smith taking the Shot at 51-07 over Willy Irwin (Clovis East) 50-06.5.  Curtis O'Neil (Clovis East) added a 13-00 Boys Pole Vault win.
