Kraychir Breaks National Indoor Record
Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 @ United Heritage Indoor Meet (Nampa, Idaho)

from Hank Kraychir:
Boise, Idaho – In her first meet of the season VS Athletics’ Katie Kraychir threw a new national freshman girl’s high school 20-pound weight throw record of 57’3”, which broke the existing record by nearly five feet.
The old girl’s freshman record of 52'07.25" was established almost two years ago by Georgia weight thrower Lauren Chambers.
Of interest, the high school women’s weight throw has undergone a huge explosion, with almost every existing record being replaced. Much of the credit can be given to the remarkable efforts of Harold Connelly and Bob Gourley.
Connelly, 1956 Olympic Hammer Gold Medalist, has spearheaded much of the needed change that has come from within the USATF and has personally put his reputation on the line. In essence, the USATF now has a youth development program, which is beginning to see results.
Furthermore, long before the recent weight throw and hammer youth explosion, Gourley maintained a high school weight throw and hammer network, which kept most of the younger throwers in the United States informed about their national standing. This modest program kept the dream of weight and hammer throwing alive for decades.
Kraychir is currently ranked 3rd nationally this season and has the 9th furthest throw all-time. She also holds the unique distinction of throwing 57’ in the weight throw and taking 2nd at the 2007 USATF Club Nationals in 8th grade.
With about five weeks to go, Kraychir will focus her training on the 2008 Nike Indoor Nationals in Washington DC, which occurs March 15.
