(PASADENA, Ca) -- Pasadena's other "Granddaddy of Them All" is back, alive, and kicking strong!
Oh yes, and now there's a grandchild in the mix as well...
The Pasadena Games Invitational, one of America's oldest and most prestigious prep track and field meets, returned after a one-year layoff to host leading athletes from 54 schools from around the Golden State, showing off a newly-upgraded facility, a new sponsoring school, and a brand new division aimed at showcasing the best small-schools programs on the scene.
"Pure success, all around," said Pasadena Games and Small Schools Cup director Dr. John Bianchi. "A great day of action and on a beautiful Southern California day... What more could anyone ask for?"
With warm temperatures and powder-blue skies blanketing the Jackie Robinson Stadium complex at Pasadena City College, athletes combined to produce a grand total of 149 DyeStatCal Elite marks including a nation-leading time in boys 300-meter intermediate hurdles and state-leading performances in a bevvy of boys' track events as well as the boys high hurdles and the triple jump!
The national leader came courtesy of Taft High's Jeshua Anderson, yet it almost never happened! Anderson, who stormed onto the hurdling scene late last year, had elected to skip his speciality event (the 300-meter intermediates) in favor of a rare 400m dash performance, but when he learned that hurdlnig All-American Terry Prentice of Diamond Ranch was at the meet, those plans were scrapped. Anderson petitioned to be placed in the intermediates, but all lanes in the invitational heat were full. It was until just minutes before the race that Notre Dame hurdler James Flynn offered to give up his lane (Flynn ended up running in another heat), thus giving Anderson a chance to race in the best heat.
Although stuck in Lane 1, Anderson was just happy just to get a chance. Out like a rocket from the gun, Anderson worked hard to negotiate the tight turn but had opened a sizeable advantage over a surprisingly slow-starting Prentice and the rest of the field. Anderson remained strong throughout the race, with Prentice then coming on very quickly to make it exciting. At the finish, however, Anderson received the nod with a blistering 36.47 effort that kept Prentice (36.88) at bay.
Other state-leading marks were turn in by Westlake's Cory Primm (1:50.60 for 800m), Inglewood's boys 4x100m relay (42.12), Prentice in the high hurdles (13.99), and Inglewood's D'ondre McDonald (21.22 for 200m).
The meet took place a short five-minute drive from the historic Rose Bowl, which annually plays host to the famed college football bowl game of the same name and considered "the granddaddy of them all" for its longevity and prestige. The same could he said for the track meet, which originated circa World War II as a local affair and featured such greats as multi-sport star Jackie Robinson from the golden era and Olympians such as Inger Miller and Alice Brown from the modern era.
As exciting as the 64th edition meet played out this year, it appeared organized as well. With La Salle High School of Pasadena joining on as the presenting and sanctioning school for the event, an army of La Salle parents and boosters oversaw various areas of need to create an effective and safe environment for athlete participation in favorable competition conditions.
"We do hope this marriage lasts forever," said Bianchi, referring to the involvement of La Salle Coach Fred Riley's staff and boosters in 2007. "They are a great team or individuals - we're very proud to have them as part of The Games."
Dr. Bianchi, a leading Southland chiropractor, continues his involvement with the meet on a volunteer basis after originally becoming involved in the event in the 1990s as a member of the Pasadena Jaycees.
The 2007 inductees into the Pasadena Games and Small Schools Cup Hall of Fame were Walter Opp and Paul Bodenshot. Opp was the legendary coach who oversaw the Muir High track and field dynasty in the 1960s and 1970s. He was represented by his extended family during ceremonies. Bodenshot, the former director of the Pasadena Games and a longtime coach/athletic director within the San Gabriel Valley, is retired but made the trip from his home in Washington to enjoy the festivities.
The 2008 Pasadena Games Invitational and Small Schools Cup is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 30th. # #
