Mt. Carmel Invitational
Saturday, March 24 @ Mt. Carmel HS

San Diego Section

This years 29th Annual Mt. Carmel Invitational is set to take place this Saturday with some of the finest individuals and teams in the state. Approximately 80 high schools will descend upon the Sundevil all weather facility in the search of fast times on the track and big marks in the field

Inglewood High, JW North, Muir, Rio Mesa and Rancho Verde are some of the talented Southern Section teams to venture south to run against the best of the San Diego Section athletes. D’ondre McDonald of Ingle wood will run his specialties against a talented group of sprinters headed by super sophomore Joe Cooks of Mission Hills in San Diego

Maurice Shaw of Colony High returns to Mt Carmel this year as one of the best in the state in the 110 Highs at 14.39 and in the 300 Intermediates with a 38.89. Jalisa Williams of Muir head a strong field of lady hurdlers with the 300 hurdles perhaps being one of the finest events of the day

San Diego fans are in for a treat as four of the states best relay teams toe the line for fast times. Rancho Verde, headed by sprint ace Alicia King, is among the state leaders in the 4 x 100 at 46.61 and 4 x 400 in 3:54.02. JW North of Riverside is among the state leaders in the 4 x 800(8:05.80) and is the states best in the 4 x 400 (3:16.24). North is anchored by Nevin Guterriz, who ran 46:78 last year on the way to being the state meet runner up in that event.

The girls distance races show strong promise of excitement with strong competition in every event. Emily Dunn of Esperanza and Christy Adamyk of Glendora head distance fields that are deep with competitive talent.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated races of the day is the 3200 debut of Macky Fleet. Macky, fresh off a 3:50.48 last week in the 1500, will be facing all of the best distance runners in San Diego in that race.

One of the unique aspects of Mt. Carmel Sundevil Stadium is that all of the field events but the shot and discus are inside the track. Great crowd support lends itself to great marks in in both the horizontal and vertical jumps. Three of the states best vertical jumpers will compete this weekend in this meet. Emily Matoon of Rancho Bernardo (12’7”), Whitney Sisler (5’8”) of La Costa Canyon, and Richard LaFleur (6’8”) of Escondido lead the Golden state in the Pole Vault and High Jump respectively and look to go higher at Mt. Carmel.

Both Running and Field Events start at 11pm in what promises to be a exciting day of track and field in San Diego.
