Start of Fri evening's 3k event - Colorado's Stevens and Fawad Khan (Unat/Palos Verdes HS)

The first evening of action at the New Mexico High School Indoor Classic saw a number of fine performances from California athletes who had made the trek to Albuquerque to compete on one of the country’s finest indoor facilities against competition from throughout the Southwest.

In the only boys final and the high school highlight of the evening, the 3000 meter run, senior Fawad Khan of Palos Verdes High School and junior Kevin Williams of D'evelyn High School (Lakewood, CO) put on a clinic in strategic, tactical racing.  Both started conservatively, held the rail, and marked the leaders through a 1600 split in the mid 4:50s.  With five laps (1000m) remaining Williams made his move, with Khan right on his heels.  The pair gapped the pack together but in the final 300 Khan could not match Williams' final gear in the altitude to which Williams is accustomed, as Williams put down an astonishing last surge for an unofficial last 800m of 2:15 and winning unofficial time of 9:00.80, at altitude a very fine early season time.  Khan held on for second in an unofficial 9:07.  The crowd clamored for a rematch in the mile on Saturday; whether that will happen remains to be seen.

In other California action, Jasmine Joseph (Poly) looked strong in the 60 meter dash prelims, cruising to a mark of 7.86 and the top seed a spot in Saturday’s 60 meter dash final.  Lindsay Cooper of John Muir claimed the second seed in 8.02 and her teammate Jalisa Williams qualified first in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.03.  John Muir HS also looked strong in the boys sprint qualifying, powered by Marcus Thompson (4th seed in the 60 meter hurdles, 8.80), Ahmere Owens (7.22, second seed in the 60 meter dash), and Tramell Clipper (7.36 and eighth seed in the 60 meter dash).
