Californians head to Penn Relays this coming weekend!!

A Golden State contingent of Long Beach Poly, Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley), and Eric Avila (Bonita Vista) in the Boys Mile, will head off to Philadelphia this weekend for the grandaddy of all Relay Carnivals, the spectacular Penn Relays!!

Super Golden State Baton squads will try to hold their own against an amazing group of Jamaican teams and strong East Coast crowd with brutal qualifying followed by exciting Finals action during the weekend.

Long Beach Poly is a veteran of the Penn Relays grind, with Rancho Verde a talented set of Girls’ baton squads to join the action on that side. Avila will be part of a great Boys Mile, with Turquoise Thompson (LB Poly) facing a great group of 400 meter Girl Hurdlers, with Rancho Verde athletes in the Boys High Jump (Brandon Brown), and Girls Long Jump (Brittany Bozeman and Alycia Herring).

Turquoise Thompson (LB Poly)

Thursday morning (10:20 am) the nation’s #2 prep 300 hurdler, Turquoise Thompson (LB Poly) 41.74, will wade in during sections of the 400 Hurdlers, led by Jamaica’s Shana-Gaye Tracy (57.90 for the 400's), with Americans Nicole Sanders (Menchville, VA) 58.88, Leslie Njoku (McNair Academy, NJ) 59.28, and Ryan Krais (Methacton, PA) 59.34 a very talented crew! With Thompson attempting to show fitness to make the US World Youth team, a squad picked this squad off USATF 2006 JO championship participation and quality 2007 runs, this will be a key chance to show her abilities over the one lap barriers where she was 60.86 in the summer of 2006.

LB Poly (left) leads nation at 45.79 - Rancho Verde improved to 45.9 this week!!

Thursday at 12:05 pm the Long Beach Poly nation-leading Girls 4x100 relay group start the action with the heats, with their 45.79 Arcadia win hopefully faring them nicely against a powerful Jamaican contingent. Rancho Verde is #4 Nationally at 46.23 from last weekend in the Inland Empire Meet! Holmwood from the Island nation of Jamaica has already run 44.67 this spring, with Edwin Allen 45.18 the other Jamaican squad under 46.0 this year. A finals spot should not be a problem for each of the California squads, should they keep their cool in the heats. There is no experience like Penn in the relay qualifying where they hustle teams through like nobody’s business. Not far off a race a minute in the one-lapper! No East Coast team has been under 47 seconds this spring so far.

The Girls 4x400 heats on Thursday afternoon have Long Beach Poly (#42 at 3:45 pm) (3:41.17 #2 nationally from Arcadia, behind Roosevelt of Maryland who is in the meet here), facing Jamaica’s St. Jago 3:43.81 right off the bat! The next Heat, event #43, features Rancho Verde (3:49.19 from Arcadia and among the nation’s top ten) in their prelims contest wading in against Jamaica’s best, Holmwood, who have blazed 3:34.29 this spring, with Manchester (Jamaica) 3:41.22 in the same race, so it will be hot and heavy early on!!

Thursday afternoon at 1:45 pm will be the Girls Championship Long Jump, with athletes faced with an interesting choice, or a lot of jumping, as the Girls Championship Triple Jump goes off at the same time! Virginians Shakia Forbes (Bethel, Hampton) 19-08w and 19-06.25 indoors, and Brittni Finch (Centreville) 19-07.25 lead five over 19 feet in the field, with Brittany Bozeman and Alycia Herring from Rancho Verde hopefully inspired with the setting to improve their mid-18 foot personal bests here!

going 1:28.43 at the Arcadia Invitational

Friday morning at 11:25 will start the Boys Large Schools 4x100 Relay heats, with the Jamaican teams taking six of the finals spots last spring here!! It is hoped that LB Poly can squeeze into the “top-end” mix though that might be a challenge. Jamaica’s St. Lago leads the parade with a 39.80 from this spring, with Calabar 40.28, Kingston College 40.48, Camperdown 40.56, and others will be tough!! South Shore (Brooklyn) was 41.05 last weekend form the East, with Poly (41.39) best of the rest of the US pack chasing!

Friday afternoon at 2:24 pm is the Girls Championship of America 4x100 with hopefully LB Poly and Rancho Verde having done a fine job in the qualifying and moving on to award status in the Finals run!!

Eric Avila (Bonita Vista)
has run 4:14.90 this spring

At 5:50 pm on Friday is the High School Boys Mile Run, with Bonita Vista’s spirited Eric Avila a part of a good field that he is capable of doing a good job in. Off a 4:14.90 at Trabuco Hills Avila will proabably need to get out a bit quicker than usual to cope with Matt Centrowitz (Broadneck, Md) 4:08.55, Arcadia Mile runner-up Charles White (Cherry Creek, Colorado) 4:10.04, Andrew Perkins (Wisconsin) 4:11.77 1600, Paul Springer (Pa) 4:12.61 indoors, and Arcadia two mile champ, Luke Puskedra (Judge Memorial, Salt Lake City, Ut), who was 4:13 indoors for 1600 meters.

Friday evening at 6:05 pm is the Girls Championship of America 4x400 with the LB Poly and Rancho Verde group hopefully having qualified and moving to personal bests in this contest.

Saturday morning at 9:10 starts the parade of Boys 4x400 heats and local finals races that stretches with the prep portion until 1:10 (that’s a race every 5 minutes for a few hours). The LB Poly runs in event #199 at 11:35 a.m. with the Jackrabbits up against it right here with Camperdown (Jamaica) 3:13.43, Herbert Morrison (Jamaica) 3:14.74, South Shore (Brooklyn) 3:16.20), with the National Scholastic Indoor Champ Jackrabbits 3:16.29 needing a solid effort to make the Finals in the competition.

Devon Bond, the defending High Jump Champ from Trenton Central in New Jersey has cleared 7-00, with four others in the field over 6-10 for Rancho Verde’s Brandon Brown to compete against.

Saturday afternoon at 2:10 pm is the Championship of America Boys 4x100 Relay, with hopefully the LB Poly squad on the starting line.

Saturday afternoon at 5:25 pm is the Boys 4x400 Championship of America Finals, with hopefully LB Poly here also, and with something left to improve after a very tought heat seed.
