LB Poly Holds Slim Lead over LB Wilson with Discus Remaining

The Long Beach Poly High boys track team could very well defend its
State and Southern Section Division I titles this season. A Moore
League dual meet title, though, might be in jeopardy.
Poly holds a 64-63 lead over Long Beach Wilson in a dual meet contested
Tuesday on a dirt oval at Poly. The outcome hinges on the final event,
the discus, which will be held today at 3 p.m. at Long Beach City
College.
Both Poly and Wilson are 2-0 in league. The winner of the Poly-Wilson
dual meet will likely have the edge on the race for the Moore League
title.
Wilson hasn’t defeated Poly since 1995, the year of the Bruins’ last
league title, or challenged the Jackrabbits since a 64-62 loss in
1996.
“It’s going to be fun either way, win or lose,” Wilson coach Ed Hauck
said. “I knew it would be decided by a few points. It’s gone back and
forth. Some of the things didn’t go our way but there are events that
we didn’t expect to win.’’
One of them was the 4 x 400 relay in the last race when Antwaan
Mitchell brought Wilson to a come-from-behind victory. Mitchell also
finishing a surprising second in the 400.
Wilson sweeps led by Tony Cairo, Edwin Rodriguez and Rith South in the
1,600, 3,200 and pole vault helped offset Poly’s sprint strength.
Defending state 200 and 400 champion Bryshon Nellum won the 100 (10.7)
and the 200 meters (21.8) and ran on Poly’s victorious 400 relay
(42.5). Alfred Hines won the 110 high hurdles and 300 intermediates.
In the discus, neither Wilson nor Poly has any returning finalists from
last year’s league championships. Wilson’s hopes will rest on junior
Miles Hoover, the 2006 frosh-soph league champion, and senior Chris
Abasta. Poly junior Werner Ritual won the league junior varsity title
last season.
Asked about Poly’s discus prospects, coach Don Norford said. “We’ll
have people there.’’
The Poly girls clinched the dual meet victory and lead, 74-56, over
Wilson in a matchup between 2-0 teams.
On an afternoon where both teams seemed content to rest their top
athletes in preparation for the Arcadia Invitational on Friday and
Saturday, Poly sophomores Turquoise Thompson and Jasmine Joseph teamed
on Poly’s winning 400 and 1,600 relays. Thompson won the 300 hurdles in
42.8 and Joseph won the 400 in 56.6.
Senior Shelise Williams of Wilson won the 100 (11.7) and the 200
(24.2). Junior Angele Cooper, a state qualifier in the 400 for the
Bruins, won the triple jump at 36-4.
