Long Beach Wilson Ends Seven-Year Drought against Long Beach Poly, 77-59

Ebony Collins let her feelings regarding Wilson High’s Moore League dual meet against Poly on Thursday be well known.
The Wilson junior gleefully prance around the Wilson High infield wearing a Black T-Shirt that read in large white letters “Jackrabbits? Never Heard of EM!” in reference to the Poly mascot.[ep
Collins made her presence well known to her crosstown rivals on the track with wins in the 100 meters, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and in the 400 relay to help Wilson (2-0) to a 79-57 victory and end a seven-year losing streak to Poly (1-1) and the sting of a 68-67 loss in 2005.[ep
“We got tired of losing to them year after year,” Collins said. “We used it as motivation. It doesn’t mean we’ll be better than them at Moore League finals now (Poly) has something to look for.’’
Collins, a double medalist in the IAAF World Youth Games in Morocco last summer, didn’t let running on a rain-soaked dirt track dampen her spirits after the meet was moved to Wilson from Long Beach City College’s all-weather oval because of a conflict with a St. Anthony meet.[ep
Collins turned back Shana Woods of Poly in a highly anticipated matchups in the 100 hurdles, 13.9 to 14.0, and 300 hurdles, 43.8 to 45.6, and led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 in 11.3 with De Ana Carson (11.6) and Tasia Smith (11.9).
Collins opened the meet running the second leg of Wilson’s 400 relay with Tasia Smith, Shelise Williams and Angele Cooper that timed 46.9.
The USC-bound Woods, who set a national indoor pentathlon record in March, won the long jump at 18-7 but it was not enough to offset Wilson’s track strength.
Sophomore Shelise Wiliams led a 1-2 finish in the 200 with Carson in the 200 in 24.4 and 24.5 and Paula Parker spearheaded a sweep of the top three in the 800 with a win in 2:23.9.[ep
Poly freshman Jasmine Joseph won the 400 in 55.4 but the Jackrabbits only won three track races. One of them, the 1,600 relay by default, in the final event after Wilson didn’t enter a team with the outcome already decided.
“(Wilson) just beat us,” Poly coach Don Norford said. “I’ve got ninth-grade girls running against (Collins). It might take a few years before they come around.’’
Wilson coach Terry Kennedy was cautious in taking too much from Thursday’s victory. The Bruins rebounded from last year’s loss to defeat Poly to win the Southern Section Division I title.
“Dual meets aren’t the end of the world for me,” Kennedy said. “Kids like to win them but there is a long way to go in the season. This is just step one to what our total goal is.’’[ep
The Poly boys (2-0) defeated Wilson (1-1), buoyed by double winner Marquan Jackson in the 110 high hurdles (14.4) and 300 intermediates (41.2). Casey McCombs won the 1,600 (4:42.0) and 3,200 (10:23.7) for Wilson.
