"Golden Girls" Emerge At Golden West!
Knight and Hasay continue stellar years while
Beard and Vanatta emerge mightily; three new
nation-leading marks are achieved on girls' side

California's amazin' femmes dominated the Golden West Invitational
mile, with super frosh Jordan Hasay (#233) outkicking Alex Kosinski
(#478) and early leader Nicole Blood (directly behind Hasay) to win
in a nation-leading 4:42.21, the 11th-fastest prep time in history and
also the second-fastest freshman ever -- right behind Mary Decker!

(FOLSOM) -- You already know the names Bianca Knight and Jordan Hasay. Here's two new ones to commit to memory: Katie Vanatta and Jessica Beard.
The Mississipian Knight and the Californian Hasay proved most impressive at Sunday's 47th annual Golden West Invitational, with the former earning a pair of wind-inhibited sprint titles at 100 and 200 meters 11.50 and 23.30), and the latter overcoming both a rare early-race deficit and a staunch late-race challenge to win the highly anticipated girls' mile in near-frosh-record time (4:42.21). Knight was awarded the meet's Most Valuable Performer while Hasay was named as the meet's Most Inspirational Performer.
But Vanatta and Beard pulled off perhaps the meet's most prolific triumphs.
Vanatta, a freshman who quietly glistened onto the national radar with a sparkling 10:30.79 (believed to be #2 all-time at altitude) at her state-meet qualifier in Colorado last month, posted the second-fastest 9th-grade time in history (trailing only Hasay's 10:07.56 in April) with a dazzling 10:16.18 clocking. The Ralston Valley High frosh reeled off a searing 5:13-5:03 negative split to wear down a Who's Who field that included three-time FootLocker nationals runner-up Marie Lawrence of Nevada, California's Christy Adamyk and Lauren Saylor, Colorado's Keara Sammons, and Arizona's Whitney Hardt. All arrived here with career credentials as either decorated All-Americans or former state champions. Vanatta forged a very consistent series of lap splits, going 73.5-79.9-79.9-79.9-77.2-77.2-75.8-72.8, leading some to speculate the outcome of a Hasay-Vanatta matchup on this evening.
Beard, a junior from Ohio, defeated 2006 national leader Sa'de Williams of California and U.S. #2 Brandi Cross of Texas head-on in winning the featured girls' 400. Beard positioned herself for the win with a strong effort on the final curve, then charged home for the win in a nation-leading time 52.16. Cross (52.83) outlasted Williams (53.36) to snare the runner-up position.
Hasay (using a time adjustment from the full mile down to 1600 meters) and Beard were joined by Colorado's Sarah Cocco in establishing new nation-leading marks on an evening when the trio's performances were made all the more impressive in the face of stifling winds. Cocco churned her way to a lifetime-best 2:08.45 to top a diverse field where the first five finishers hailed from different states.
As impressive as Hasay's time was on its own merit (4:42.21 for the full mile, #2 all-time for a frosh behind Mary Decker's 4:42.0 achieved 33 years earlier; also supplanting Nicole Blood as the #11 all-time high schooler), this performance was truly a benchmark indicator of progress in her short career. It was last year at this meet that a seasoned group of high-end talents exploited her tactical weaknesses by maintaining mid-race contact while letting the quick-starting phenom do the workload. Then they swallowed her up with 650 meters to go.
Not so a year later. This time it was University of Oregon-bound sensation Blood who took the tactical gamble, bringing the pack across in 70.5 and 2:22.2 for the first two 1/4-mile splits. Hasay then made the pass to assume the lead on the first turn after the midway point, with fellow Californian Alex Kosinski (from nearby Oak Ridge HS) trying gamely to cover the move. The two began gapping the field slightly at the 3/4-mile mark (3:33.1), with Kosinski making a final surge with 100 meters to go that Hasay effectively stonewalled to seal the victory.
Afterward, the tactically improved Hasay credited her win to her patience, stating that Blood's willingness to take the lead and break the wind allowed her to conserve for a strong finish. What a difference a year makes!
Knight, typically very strong on the curve, put her stamp on the deuce in very impressive fashion here, storming out of the blocks to gain complete control by 40 meters. No one dared trying to match her pace, with the diminutive speedster exploding off the curve and down the straightaway to win by a stunning .97 seconds! The effort came in the late evening, with chilly temperatures and a steady headwind hampered most athletes. Then again, Knight is unlike most athletes.
           Other leading highlights included:

  • Californian Terry Prentice emerging as one of two male double winners, with the Diamond Ranch High junior racing to a fine 13.89 against a 2.0 meters-per-second headwind in the 110-meter high hurdles and also recording a best leap of 23-11.25 to claim top honors in the long jump.
  • Floridian Calvin Smith chalking up victories in both the 200 and 400, with the former in 22.14 into a wind and the latter being timed in 47.12. Smith's triumph in the deuce came over 100-meter winner and fellow statesman Clifford Spiller.
  • Washington junior Isaac Bergman topping in-state nemesis Nectaly Barbosa in a fine 800-meter field. Bergman clipped the finish beam in a lifetime-best 1:50.68, rolling up Barbosa (third in 1:52.02) coming off the final turn to move up for the win.
  • Californians Ben Sitler (3200) and Chad Hall (mile) posting dominant wins in the distance races. Sitler proved much too strong for his rivals in galloping away to a near 3.5-second win over San Diego area's Colton Tully-Doyle (lifetime-best 9:10.88). The powerful Sitler appeared least affected by the winds which began whipping up entering the latter half of the race. Hall was the wire-to-wire winner in the mile, timing 4:11.67 to edge Washington's Michael Chinchar, who popped a fine 4-second PR to place next in 4:12.02.
  • National leader Bo Taylor of California unleashing a big 205-1 effort in the fourth round to top a quality field of boys discus throwers which included 5 of the top 10 performers in the nation to date. Winds which came in from the left hindered many of the marks.
  • Californian Amber Kaufman, absent from most of the California postseason after missing a qualifying meet, emerging as the sentimental victor in the girls high jump, clearing 5-09.00.
  • California's Sarah Robles improving to the #2 mark in the nation this Spring with a lifetime-best 168-05 in the girls discus.

Williams, Knight & Taylor
headline GWI Fields in 2006!

The nation's premier dashers are set to meet over 200 meters at Golden West, with "long sprint"
specialist Sa'de Williams (23.39/U.S. #1 52.56) of California locking horns against "short sprint"
phenom Bianca Knight of Mississippi (11.28w/U.S. #1 23.14A) in the big meet highlight!
Brandi Cross (Texas), Jessica Beard (Ohio) and Erica Alexander (Texas) are also in the deuce,
making this for an electric event that should have the place rockin'! California's Bo Taylor also
brings nation-leading credentials to Golden West as his 213-07 discus toss leads five ultra-elite throwers!

"10 Best Things To Watch at 2006 Golden West"

  1. Best Female Short/Long Sprinters Collide at 200m! -- A pair of recent 11.28 clockings by Bianca Knight (including one that lacked a verifiable wind reading) have been shelved onto the 'windy' category on the 2006 national lists, although those times and her wind-legal 11.40 account for the top three 100m marks under any conditions this spring. However, the "Mississippi Missile" should get challenged in the featured 200-meter dash, where Southern California's Sa'de Williams had been timed in a legal 23.39, ranked fifth nationally behind natio-leading and altitude-aided Knight's 23.14. It'll be Knight's acceleration versus Williams' strength!
  2. Bombs Away in Boys Discus! -- Southern Californian Bo Taylor broke the state meet record by unleashing a 213-07 fling last weekend, with the tape-measure job ranking 2nd all-time on the state list and 13th all-time on the national list. With Taylor only four inches shy of Scott Moser's state record, look for some herculean efforts from the UCLA-bound talent. With all that record talk, Taylor can't afford to have an off day either. Fellow 200-footer Geoffrey Tabor of Oklahoma joins Taylor in  group that boasts 5 of the top 10 throwers in the nation!
  3. Super-Deep Girls 800 Could Produce National Leader! -- Due to its impressive depth in recent years, some are tabbing 2006 as an off year for the two-lap challenge. Here's a chance to eradicate that thinking as it appears a half dozen of the top 25 girls in the nation will converge. A few in the field have run 2:10 and change this season, with Georgia's Brittany Hall currently holding down the top mark in America (2:08.58) for 2006.
  4. Top 3 Girls 'Quarterhorses' meet! -- America's top three one-lap dashers will arrive at this one fresh, with U.S. leader Sa'de Williams (52.56) of Southern California already posting a cache of big-meet wins this year. Williams was the year-end national leader (52.35) in 2005, but will be challenged here by Ohio's Jessica Beard (52.82) and Brandi Cross (53.00) of Texas, a place where they know how to run pretty fast when the chips are down!
  5. Floridian Boys Dashers Come to Cali! -- Seniors Clifford Spiller (10.42) and Jeremy Hall (10.44) arrive here from the Panhandle State, where the action down the straightaways has been especially hot this spring! Fellow Floridian and sophomore Harry Adams hasn't made the trip (he holds an all-conditions national best 10.31w in 2006), so these two will aim to overtake the underclassman for state and national bragging rights!
  6. Hasay & Blood Finally Meet! -- America's most decorated prep female on active rosters is former New Yorker Nicole Blood, who now calls California home. However, the household name was encountered a rude awakening on the unforgivingly tough Golden State scene, suffering setbacks to a small number of leading individuals. However, she hasn't faced national frosh wunderkind Jordan Hasay of Central California yet, and this is where they finally meet. Hasay loves setting a strong and honest pace, with Blood courting the stamina and toughness to make it interesting if this were 3200 meters. But it's the mile, and Blood and local favorite Alex Kosinski will be very duly hard-pressed to try and match talents with the diminutive but talented Hasay. Washington phenom Megan O'Reilly, who was initially said to be in the meet, has been a late scratch.
  7. Three-Time California State Champ Seeks State Boys Vault Record! -- Granite Bay HS senior Scott Roth is fresh off a third consecutive state meet crown and now readies himself for a grueling summertime schedule. He kicks it all off here, at the same meet where current national record-holder Tommy Skipper established the all-time standard of 18-03.00.  Roth, who elevated a lifetime-best 17-05.00 at the Modesto Relays last month, will be chasing Skipper, the California state record of 18-02.00 by Brandon Richards, and the nation-leading 17-06.50 achieved by Virginia's Michael Morrison in recent weeks.
  8. Tori Anthony Chases Junior-Class National Vault Record! -- From a technical standpoint, Castilleja's Tori Anthony has been in a class all her own in recent weeks, with the net result being a California state title last weekend. The Central Coast Section 11th-grade star owns a lifetime-best of 13-04.00, with Indiana's Katie Veith (the current U.S. leader) holding down the current junior class national record at 13-09. It may fall this weekend!
  9. Heated Washington Rivals Seek Top National 800m Billing! -- California's Cory Primm established the nation-leading mark (1:50.53) last weekend in winning his first state title, but that performance will receive serious heat from 11th-grade Washington sensation Nectaly Barbosa and his big in-state rival, Isak Bergman, who recently defeated Barboa for the first time. Primm, Barbosa (1:50.98) and Bergman (1:51.43) are the top non-seniors in the nation this Spring!
  10. Future UCLA teammate clash once more in Boys Shot Put -- Orange County foes Nick Robinson (65-01) and Bo Taylor (63-11.75) renew their rivalry here, with each seeking to not only win, but overtake San Diego's Darius Savage (66-03.25) as the state leader before the calendar runs out. All three will attend UCLA in the Fall.

More national records in 2006?!?

It was in 2004 that Kira Costa and Tommy Skipper (left photo) each set national
high school pole vault records to highlight that year's GWI. Now in 2006, Granite
Bay's Scott Roth (right, in right photo) takes his own stab at Skipper's record!
