Pole Vault Summit

16th Annual Indoor Gathering
Of Pole Vault Fanatics

Friday-Saturday, January 27-28, 2006
Reno Hilton, Reno, NV

National record attempts headline Day 2!
Photos by Kirby Lee, Image of Sport
Granite Bay's Scott Roth and Jordan Scott of Georgia thrilled the crowd
with a super show in the best boys flight, with each convincingly sailing
over 16-06 before taking three cracks at 17-07 to try breaking the national
record. Roth appeared to successfully clear the historic height, but then
the crossbar eventually trickled off the pegs, leaving the record intact.
Jordan Scott won the competition on fewer misses; Roth likely will take his next crack
at the record at the Husky Indoor, at U of Washington, where he'll attend college!

An estimated 1800 vaulters are here, with the first two competitions (elites)
now complete and a whopping 66 more flights to go on Saturday!

RENO -- With the music blaring, the hands clapping and the runways thundering, an orgy-fest of aerial action unfolded at the Reno Hilton on Friday evening as the 16th edition of the Pole Vault Summit got underway. Following a full day's worth of clinics and hands-on instruction, close to 2,000 vaulters packed into one of the main ballrooms to witness the culmination of opening-day action: a criss-crossing simulataneous set of elite competitions with many of America's top field eventers taking part.
The women endured far longer than the men, with the female competition commencing nearly 65 minutes after Brad Walker successfully defended his men's Vault Summit crown. Walker edged fan favorite Toby "Crash" Stevenson on fewer total misses as both cleared 18-04.50 to headline an 11-person male field. New York-based Jenn Stuczynski, training under the banner of Suhr Sports, won the women's competition on fewer misses over Jillian Schwartz in that 11-athlete competition.
Dual intersecting runways were used for the extravaganza, with the sexes alternating order on their approaches as a festive crowd cheered them on while being peppered with free t-shirts fired from an airgun and free pair of Nike spike shoes were being given away to drawing winners.
The action really heats up on Saturday as nearly 1,800 preps and collegians compete on 11 pits located in  two ballrooms, with flights grouped by personal best marks coming in. The event, co-sponsored by UCS Spirit and Nike, is enjoying its best field yet, with most of the elite names on the high school, collegiate and open level in attendance.

***High Schools Division Mini-Glimpse Preview***
World Youth Championships silver medalist Scott Roth of California
headlines a blockbuster boys field that also reportedly includes Arkansas'
Scott McCorkel (17-03 indoors already this winter), Virginia's
Mike Morrison, Georgia's Jordan Scott and every one of the
sixteen 16-footers in the nation! On the girls side, Pennsylvania's
Lindsay Regan and California's Allison Stokke are among
four 13-footers in the field. The action runs all day on Saturday!
