Indoor Track is Back!
The glow of the ceiling lights are returning, the echoing cheers of rabid fans are starting to echo, and the clitter-clatter of spikes across the wooden banked boards are becomnig audible yet again! Indoor track and field is returning to California this weekend with the inaugural Run For The Dream Indoor Meet at Fresno State University's Sav-Mart Center on the Martin Luther King Holiday!

Not just an inaugural meet, but a blockbuster display of talent showcasing some of the globe's top teens in a sensational day of action for what promises to be a historically significant new chapter of excellence in the annals of Golden State track and field. From World Youth Championships medalists and recordsetters, to rising age-group phenoms and sensational programs, this meet will have it all!
Here's out brief preview of the indoor action on tap this coming Monday:

55M Dash (100m Q)
National Indoor Record: 6.68A Aleisha Latimer (Palmer, CO) 1996
State Indoor Record: 6.68* Angela Williams (Chino, CA) 1998 (*en route to longer distance)

EVENT OUTLOOK: If all goes to form, the 55-meter dash final will be a blazer between six whirlwind finalists! All six are rated among the top 25 dashers in the nation at 100 meters outdoors for 2006, led by Long Beach Wilson's Ebony Collins (11.44) and James Logan's Kristina Davis (11.56)! Collins spends more time in the hurdle events so her blazing clocking a year ago came under clearly less exposure to the open dashes than her counterparts and her very explosive starts will create problems for her rivals here. Davis was the victim of that very controversial false start at last year's state meet after entering as the favorite, but looks to begin her redemption phase here. San Jose Valley Christian's Khrystal Carter (11.57) and Mt. Pleasant's Jeneba Tarmoh (11.81 while relatively new to the sport at the time) are joined by long sprinter Sa'de Williams of Rancho Cucamonga (the state champ at 400 meters) and jumper/hurdler DeAna Carson of Long Beach Wilson. If you scan further down the entry list, Serra's Kimyon Broom -- the outstanding hurdler -- is also entered. Only six spots to the final and at least seven mega-studs entered so... don't miss watching the qualifying heats!

Pleasant's Vashti Thomas (the second-fastest 9th grader in America at 14.16 last year) offering this event outstanding potential depth for the final! 500 yards (400m Q)

State Indoor Record: 1:04.0c  Chewaukii "Choo-Choo" Knighten (Locke, Los Angeles) 1985

EVENT OUTLOOK: OHHHHHHH MYYYYYYY!!!! Track & Field News High School Girls Editor Mike Kennedy swears that "Choo-Choo" Knighten's indoor national 500-yard record will not fall this weekend, but with Ebony Collins, Sa'de Williams and Myra Hasson locking up, don't rule anything out! Williams is the top national returnee (52.35) and Hasson checks in with a scintillating 53.26 for the one-lap outdoor race, but diminutive powerpack Ebony Collins (40.10 for the 300m low hurdles!) has the right body frame to handle the tight turns on this banked indoor track! Too bad that a pair of frosh phenoms for Long Beach Poly (including all-wower Turquoise Thompson, who blazed 53.55 as an 8TH GRADER (!!) are not entered in this one as well! To Mike Kennedy's defense, he doesn't doubt the talent assembled, but astutely pointed out that Knighten and everyone else benefited from ideal conditions at the Sunkist Invitational (later named Los Angeles Indoor Invitational) 21 years ago. "If I remember right, (Knighten) set that record the year they had just freshly refurbished the track and it was lightning fast, comparatively speaking," said Kennedy. "A lot of great marks for that track happened that year and the track conditions sure helped!"

EVENT OUTLOOK: Talent!!! We've got Saugus supertalent Shannon Murakami headlining the distance field (4:50.59 for her last Spring) that also includes two-time Footlocker Corss-Country Nationals qualifier Lauren Saylor of Buchanan and even late entry Devon Williams from Oregon. Williams, an age-group phenom of Obea Moore-like proportions when marching up through the middle school ranks, was rumored to be transferring to the Long Beach area this spring, but our sources tell us that has fallen through. Still, with 2:09.20 indoor speed for 800 meters, she'll be a factor against some California hotshots this weekend!

Long Jump
National Indoor Record: 21-07.50 Carol Lewis (Willingboro, NJ) 1981
State Indoor Record: 20-10.00 Shana Woods (Long Beach Poly) 2005

EVENT OUTLOOK: The state indoor recordholder in the event is obviously choosing to bypass one specialty to focus on a few others here this weekend. Shana Woods of Long beach Poly, who went farther than all others in prep history with her 20-10 effort last year, will bypass this one. Even so, the fireworks will be plenty as Claremont's Ashika Charan (19-05.50), Carson's Danielle Watson, Long Beach Wilson's DeAna Carson and mega-newcomer Karynn Dunn are entered here. Dunn, now in her frosh year at Diamond Ranch HS in Pomona, stretched to an amazing 19-02 measurement outdoors as an 8th grader a year ago, which already puts her third on the state returnees list (behind Woods and Charan) for 2006!

EVENT OUTLOOK: Guess who the favorite is here? That's right, with only one entrant in the field, we figure that James Logan's Jaleesa Jeffrey will be allowed to throw alongside the Open competitors while posting her marks. First off, clinch the victory -- so get a "safety" mark in!

State Indoor Record: 6.22 Bryan Howard (Canyon Springs, Moreno Valley) 1994

EVENT OUTLOOK: From 10 heats of qualifying, to a two-race semifinal, to the final, the 6-lane indoor runway down the heart of the infield will be the center of attention for the short dashes as nothing attracts the eyes like speed does. Don't blink because you may miss elite-class dasher Jamere Holland of Woodland Hills Taft. Pegged as the fastest returnee in the nation in the century (10.38), the "Jamere The Jet" will need clean starts here to avoid being upset. Long Beach Poly dash specialist Isaiah Greene, which missed much of last seaosn after a freak injury in the stands at a meet, is a speedy sub-22.00 talent that will keep Holland honest, as well several others in the field, including Diamond  Ranch's Terry Prentice, Gardena Serra's Lawrence Trice and Hanford's Avery Horn.

The advantage along these boards could go to the smaller individual along the tight banks. If memory serves correct, Moreno is quite tall and might be at a slight disadvantage here.          EVENT OUTLOOK: When it comes to distance running indoors, experienced racers oft make unforgiveable mistakes. Along the tight and banked turns, a steady pacing economy is preferred over a quick start "on the boards" as the latter approach often backfires after fatigue sets in. Brothers Daniel and Diego Mercado of West Covina have high-octane "engines" to work from, with strength-minded adversary Jake Matthews of Folsom also being a high-profile entry to watch. The race will not necessarily be won by the quickest, but more the smartest. Racing indoors over several laps is an art, and we'll see which athlete reveals a masterful paintbrush.

4X440 Relay

EVENT OUTLOOK: Look out for some flyers here! With the talent potentially gathered in this one, the momentum from inexperienced indoor dashers along those turns could very well lead to some youngsters flying right off the boards and into the stands! Taft of Woodland Hills could carry major horsepower in this one, especially if Jamere Holland (10.38/20.92) is carrying on anchor! Serra of Gardena, which has an amazing tradition in the long relay, should prove to be tough here as well.

EVENT OUTLOOK: Teams rarely run this event outdoors, let alone undercover, so it'll be hard to pick a favorite here. Keep an eye on Arcadia, which has a pair of kids flirting right at 2:00 (T.J. Bacic and Ryan Herrera) for the 800m and two others coming off a very successful cross-country campaign in which the team placed a stunning third in Division I right here in Fresno! Madera and McFarland, two Central Section distance running powerhouses, will be in the mix as well, with the Madera crew graduating the nucleus from a lineup that went 7:55.45 at the Arcadia Invitational a year ago but reloading very impressively during the cross-country season!

Armstrong, who came put of nowhere to win both the Open AND Elite divisions in the same day at last year's Arcadia Invitational (he won the first to qualify for the second, which he also won in a lifetime-best 6-09), is the state's #3 returnee for 2006, while Sheppard's best reported clearance of 6-06 (at the Junior Olympics Regionals in July) tabs him among the Golden State's 10 best for the new season.

National Indoor Record: 17-06.50  Pat Manson (Aurora Central, CO) 1986
State Indoor Record: 17-06.00 Brandon Richards (San Marcos, Santa Barbara) 1985

EVENT OUTLOOK: With World Youth Games silver medalist Scott Roth ranking as the nation's top returnee and the last three state champions featured here, this event could get the Golden State's 2006 action off to a rockin' start! Definitely a bit of a different feel trying to vault indoors, it's be interesting to witness which of the entered athletes adjust best and quickest to the cozy Sav-Mart Center surroundings. Roth, the two-time defending state champion at Granite Bay, has reportedly been vaulting superbly in workouts in recent weeks, aiming to kick off his senior year in grand fashion. The age-16 national record holder (17-02.25), Roth will also go after the age-17 mark (17-06.50) this spring/summer! Granite Bay teammate Ryan Shuler, the 2003 state champion as a freshman (!), joins Roth in pursuit of aerial success this season and sports a lifetime personal best of 16-01, achieved at June's Golden West Invitational after rebounding from season-long shin problems. Shuler's personal best is just a shade higher than UCLA-signed senior Greg Woepse of Mater Dei, winner of the 2005 Southern Section Masters Meet in 16-00. Woepse, the latest in a line of family vaulters, currently ranks 11th on the all-time Orange County list and is the #10 returnee in the nation for 2006. Placer's David Rhodes and San Benito's Todd Merrigan are tied as the #10 returnees in the state this Spring, with personal best of 15-00.

Whitney's Kyle Bell (56-03 at the Reedley Invitational) are Taylor's main challengers here in an event where 3 of the state's 7 top returnees are featured.

EVENT OUTLOOK: With the rarley contested event being fielded, it's tough to handicap this one. Noticeably absent from the entry field is Bishop Amat HS junior Trevor Kraychir, whose lifetime-best toss of 67-00 ranked among the top 10 performers in the nation in 2005.
