2006 Simplot Indoor Games
Boys Preview
Pocatello, Idaho
February 16-18, 2006

Sky is the limit with Speed to Burn in Pocatello!!

(Athletes listed below competing for clubs or unattached - schools listed for purposes of identification only)

The 2006 Simplot Indoor Games feature its usual wave after wave of super fields that make up the three days of competition in Pocatello, Idaho. As athletes come in from coast to coast there will be a ton of super match-ups, with a record possibility or two along the way!!

Roth photo by Photo Run

Arkansas's Spencer McCorkel and California's Scott Roth
Do not be surprised if one of the above duo comes away from Idaho
with a National Pole Vault Record - the slightly rarified air and super meet
atmosphere could help lift either of the duo over the 20 year old 17-06.5 mark!!

A super Pole Vault field features five sixteen footers, led by the nation’s #1 and #2 jumper, Spencer McCorkel, a junior from Bryant Arkansas (17-03.5 this winter) and Scott Roth (Granite Bay, California) with a 16-10 effort undercover already. If hot, the duo can certainly challenge the National Indoor record of 17-06.5 by Pat Manson (Colorado) from 20 years ago in 1986!! Wyoming’s Ben Peterson (16-02.5), with Texan Victor Weirich, and California’s Greg Woepse, latest from the great vaulting family, other 16-footers. There will be hot action on that runway!!

Scheuerman photo by Doug Speck - McMillan-

Super Short End dashers in titanic showdowns include (L-R) North Carolina's Trenton Guy -
Colorado's JT Scheuerman - New York's Terrius McMillan

The flat races up through the 800 and the hurdles all feature super groups! The nation’s top two dashers indoors this winter over 60 meters will battle, with North Carolina’s Trenton Guy, a junior at West Charlotte, having blasted a 6.76 two weeks back, with Rocky Mountain star, JT Scheuerman (Littleton, Colo) 6.78 in late January. Terrius McMillan (Newbergh Academy, NY) has run 6.35 indoors this winter for the 55m distance. Scheuerman, Baylor bound with Coach Clyde Hart obviously spotting a Jeremy Wariner type talent in the powerful Coloradan, blasted a 21.70 oversize 200 a week ago in Washington for the nation’s fastest indoor clocking this winter over that distance. Scheuerman was 46.93 for 400m last spring outdoors! Michigan’s Ahmad Rashad (Carman-Ainsworth, Flint) has blasted 22.09 for the 200m distance this winter, and will be a factor in the short sprint also as the State Div I outdoor 100m champ at 10.56–he’s run 6.88 in the 60m sprint this winter.

Anderson photo by Joy Kamani - Henry by Doug Speck

Benson Tech's Nate Anderson shows off his Pan American Games 400m Gold Medal
Clemore Henry of Transit Tech is a veteran of the boards with super range!!

The 400 is led by Oregon star, Nate Anderson (Benson Tech), with the 46.47 star second last year in the US Junior outdoor championships! Anderson will have to work here, with the 47.90 star this winter having Floridan Chris Ward, 46.97 last year as a soph for Evans of Orlando and 49.43 this winter, and Transit Tech of Brooklyn star Clemore Henry, who has super range from 33.91 (national 300m leader) all the way out to 1:21.16 for 600m. A real veteran of the boards, Henry, who has run 48.61 this winter, will be tough to top, with positioning after the cut around the tight turns so important!!

Williams photo John Dye - Jones photo Doug Speck

One of Track's great stories in the last year is that of the nation's top 800 star
Louisiana/North Carolina's Karjuan Williams - Ricahrd Jones brings sub-1:54
speed to the 800 meter contest!!

One of the nation’s great middle distance runners, and a great story of personal fortitude in the eye of Hurricane Katrina and the follow-up, is that of Karjuan Williams (New Bern, NC), who had a super two year start to his prep career at St. Augustine, New Orleans. Like thousands of Louisiana families the Williams’ group had to move, ending up on the east coast. Williams was 1:50.14 as a soph last year and National US Junior champ along the way. As a tribute to his personal strength and support from those around him, he has not missed a beat on the running oval, blasting a 1:02.8 500 meter national leader this winter, and adding 47.99 (400) and 1:56.59 (800) clockings along the way to indicate readiness to take on all-comers here! Richard Jones (Benicia, California) was 1:53.79 last spring and the Sac Joaquin section area champ over 800m, with Chris Sweeney, Ryan Peterson, and Lodi of California’s Jeff Merrill times under 1:56 in the field!

Reed photo by John Dye - Prentice photo by Donna Dye

Colorado's Darius Reed 13.70 110mHH outdoors and fine 2006 start indoors!!
Terry Prentice - California 14.00 flyer outdoors and 24-00 Long Jumper indoors this winter!!

Colorado’s Darius Reed is the co-national leader in the 60m High Hurdles at 7.91, with the Washington HS of Denver star 13.70 outdoors last spring and 4th place in the US Junior nationals over the 42" hurdles. Terry Prentice (Diamond Ranch, Ca) was 14.00 last year and fifth in the California State meet, with a 24-00 long jump this winter. Transit Tech’s Stephen McLean has great range, with a 14.40 high’s time as a tenth grader outdoors last spring.

South Dakota's Eric Flores is 69-05.5 in the Weight Throw and National Leader
in the Shot at 63-11.5 (like the shirt!) - Trevor Kraychir is part of the nation's top "family
of throwers" out of Twenty-Nine Palms, California

The Weight throw field on the Boys’ side is great, with that event the highlight of Thursday’s first day of action on the infield! With the 25# implement, Eric Flores (Custer, SD) is the #3 athlete on the 2006 national list at 69-05.5, with David Schiedt (Lassiter, Marietta, Ga) next in the entire country at 69-01.25. Trevor Kraychir of Twenty-Nine Palms, California is #2 nationally with the 35# weight at 56-02.75, with Cody Cox (Lovett, Atlanta, Ga) 66-11.25 (#7 nationally with the 25#), 192-08 discus thrower, junior Jordan Stray (Centralia, Wash) 63-02, and Raul Gonzalez (Alta Loma, CA) 59-01.5. Dynamite group!!

Eric Quick (Liberty, Bakersfield, CA) has come out charging in 2006
with a 48-10 Triple Jump best and 23-00.75 Long Jump

Horizontal jump action has Terry Prentice (Diamond Ranch, Ca) 24-00 (#2 US 06) in the Long Jump, with Eric Quick (Liberty, Bakersfield) out to 23-00.75 indoors already. Quick adds a 48-10 Triple Jump for the #3 mark in the nation this winter. In the Shot Put Eric Flores (Custer, SD) shows up as the national leader indoors this winter at 63-11.25, with the 199-0 Discus thrower from last spring the round ball favorite over Korion Morris (Renton, Wash), the State 3A champ at 60-05 last spring, with Colin Boevers (Judge Memorial, Salt Lake City) 58-06.5 to win the BYU Invite this winter! The High Jump has Bishop Kelly star Corbin Duer 6-06.75 leading the entrants, with 6-6 jumpers Ben Jasinski (Rapid City Central, SD) and Idaho Falls State 5A Champ Eric Follet top challengers.

Farnsworth photo Rich Gonzalez

Colorado's Daniel Roberts was a super twelfth in the Foot Locker National Cross-Country
Finals - Taylor Farnsworth is now a local athlete at Highland of Pocatello, but last year was
one of the nation's top sophs in California at Buchanan HS with 4:22 and 9:24 distance bests.
California transplants have blossomed, with Adam McDonald, now at Mountain View, Orem
Utah, a State 5A champ this fall in cross-country!

A good 3200m battle will feature Daniel Roberts (Crested Butte Academy, CO), twelfth in the Foot Locker National Finals this past December in San Diego, and local star, Taylor Farnsworth, runnerup in the Idaho State 5A Cross-Country Meet for Highland of Pocatello, with Taylor a 9:24 soph last year at Buchanan HS in Clovis, California. 1600 leader is Adam McDonald, another California transplant, from Canyon HS (Canyon Country) to Mountain View HS in Orem, Utah, where he took the State 5A title this Fall in cross-country and has run 4:24.1 for the 1600m indoors already this winter.

Relay action will be exciting and of high quality! In the 4x200, James Logan (Union City, Calif), Newburgh Academy (New York 1:30.75 already this winter), and Transit Tech (Brooklyn, NY) will battle a number of club squads, led by the Tracy Flyers (Calif) and Southern California Cheetahs. Transit Tech kind of owns the 4x400 here, with the nation’s #2 team at 3:20.17 challenging all comers in that event, with JT Scheuerman and crew’s Kryptonite Speed entered well under 3:20 on the clock! In the Sprint Medley New York squads Newburgh Academy and Transit Tech will battle strong club groups from Havre, Montana and Kryptonite Speed from Colorado. Team USA from Colorado was the quickest 4x800 group, entered with a quick sub-7:50 clocking!!
