Shana Woods impressed with a US High School record in the
Heptathlon in a quick comeback from mid-spring injury - she should
be in the medal hunt at Beijing!
Event Preview -
"Team" Russia and "Team" Germany will take on all comers here. Though
limited to two each, the squads have a number of the top in the world
as possibilities. 2005 World Youth Champ Tatyana Chernova (Russia)
was 6176 in her nation's National Junior Meet in early July, making her
the #14 All-Time World performer ever. Yana Panteleyeva (Russia)
was 5985 in mid-June, with a runner-up effort at the 2005 World Youth
competition, with the Russian duo used to the award cermonies. Nadezhda
Sergeyeva (Russia) was eleventh in the 2004 World Junior Championships
at 5410, with a 5786 best from June of 2005. Diana Rach (Germany)
was the 2005 silver medalist in the World Youth Championship competition,
with a 5807 from this June, with countrymate Romy Gurbig (5th in the
World Youth championship last summer), 5638 this June, and Marlen Buder
(Germany) 5555 this season. Iryna Ilkevych (Ukraine 5751 from this
July), and Ida Marcussen (Norway), with 5690 from this season, are the
only other ones who fit in a top eight list in the event at this level
over the last two years. Shana Woods (US) was 5533 in the
US Junior Championships, just back from a period away due to injury prior
to that meet, with Song Lijuan (China) 5502 in May, and the National
Junior Champ in July at 5404.
