Rebekah Noble (US/University of Oregon)
leads the World at the Junior level through mid-July with
her 2:02.07 in winning the US Collegiate title
Event Preview -
This is a very competitive event with a group of athletes with good experience
at the international level over two laps. While it is usually
assumed that at least one athlete out of the finals group will take the
pacing out strong (2004 World Junior pacing was 58.95 at 400 and 1:29.94
at 600), the interesting combination of correct race placement and timing
of finishing moves will be key in sorting out the medals. Three
rounds over four days can take a tad off the top end of some. It will
be interesting.
American collegiate champion Rebekah
Noble has impressed over the last two years, with a 2005 US and Pan
Am Junior double win (2:03.73 05 best). She has at least
three clockings better than that this spring on the
way to an impressive Division I US
College title (2:02.07) and US Junior win. She has a reputation
as a wicked finisher, with probably her quickest 600m split needed
along the way here. Nataliya Lupu (Ukraine) was the 2005 European
Junior champ, racing 2:02.78 to win there with a strong finish off
a off a 58.7 first 400--she had a 2:02.66 2005 best. Lydia
Wafula (Kenya) won the 2005 African Junior title at 2:02.84, winning
by 1.4 seconds, with competition in the 2004 World Junior Meet in
Grosetto. Olga Cristea (Moldova) was third in the 2005 European
Junior meet at 2:03.08 (2:02.51 05 best), with a 2:01.29 personal
best from 2004.
Mona Jabir Ahmed (Sudan) was 2:02.43
last August in Zurich, with Yang Xiaocui (China) a 2:02.64 runner-up
effort in her nation's National Games in 2005 (and 2:04.40 from 2004). There
will be others who will develop quickly in the Beijing competition.
