- prepared 7/7/06
No, Ebony Collins (US) did not change affiliations, but showed up
to last year's US National JO Championships after her World Youth
400m triumph
in a Jamaican uniform! Nicole Leach (US) had a super
first collegiate season for the UCLA Bruins this spring!

Event Preview -
This will be a very competitive and high quality event! 2004 World Junior
silver medalist Sherene Pinnock (Jamaica) and fourth placer from that competition,
Nicole Leach (US) return as finalists at this competition from two years back! Pinnock
has a seasonal best of 56.90 in taking the Penn Relays against the top US high-schoolers,
with Leach, a first year student at UCLA, a two-time American Junior Champ
with a 55.35 best and she was fourth in the US collegiate championships this
June. The two have an interesting history, with Pinnock edging Leach
for the 2004 final World Junior champonship medal, then the Jamaican Pinnock
being disqualified for a false start (the US high school system uses a "one
false start dq" method) when the duo met at the 2005 Penn Relays in the US. Pinnock
returned this year to take the treasured Penn Relays title while Leach moved
on to the college ranks.
A
trio of others will also be seeking gold here with tremendous depth at
the starting line for the finals! Kaliese Spencer (Jamaica)
set a Central American/Caribbean Junior record with her 55.61 runner-up
effort in
the Norwich
Union meet in
England in June, with a snappy 56.01 recently in a runner-up effort at
her nation's Senior Championships. Ebony Collins (US) has amazing
range, from 11.44 for 100m (silver medalist in the 2005 World Youth
Meet) to 55.96
(winner World Youth Meet 400m Hurdles last July). Collins won the
Youth Meet title by 2.34 seconds and is very tough, racing 11.44 for
her World
Youth medal in the 100 there a half an hour after a 58.92 first round
400 hurdle win. Joke Odumosu (Nigeria) has fared nicely during
an American collegiate career, racing 56.09 to make the NCAA finals this
June for her
school, University of South
Alabama.
Lauren Boden (Australia)
was 2nd in the 2005 World Youth Meet to Ebony Collins, and returns
with
a
57.45 best from early 2006, with Jamaican Nakiehsa Wilson (56.82
for second in her nation's Senior champonships recently) probably
watching the results from afar as the third from her nation sits
at home should the above mentioned duo (Pinnock-Spencer) maintain
their health.
