Event Preview -
Jamaica's Sonita Sutherland, who shocked with a runner-up 52.41 effort in the 2004 World Junior Meet after coming in with the final qualifying time, looks like the favorite here, as she comes in with a fine season in 2006 so far.  She was a 51.30 Carifta Games under 20 winner, and was 51.37 for third place in the Jamacian Senior champs in late June.  Sudan's Nawal Al-Jak was an impressive 2005 World Junior Champion at 51.19, with Croatia's Danijela Grgic second in that Youth Championship affair at 51.30, and a 2005 summer runner-up 52.42 effort in the European Junior Championship meet.  Other possible medalists appear to be Aymee Martinez (Cuba), third in the 2005 World Youth meet at 52.04 (and the 200 winner at 22.99) and Jessica Beard (USA), 51.89 in winning the US title, and used to the qualifying rounds with a quality eight race two day regimen in her June prep school state championship in Ohio.

A strong group of others will be in line for finalists' spots.  American Brandi Cross, 51.96 for second in the US Junior Champ Meet, was fourth in the 2005 World Youth affair, with Joy Eze (Nigeria) 52.20 early in 2006, and Carline Muir (Canada) a fine 52.38 2005 Jr Pan American runner-up effort.  Kseinyia Zadorina (Rusia) was 52.62 indoors this winter, with Joke Odumosu (Nigeria) 52.99 during the US collegiate season and Bobby-Gaye Wilkins the 2006 Jamaican Jr Champ at 52.85.  Wilkins and favorite Sonita Sutherland led a Holmwood Tech school team that blazed 3:36.98 (4x400) and 8:45.87 (4x800) in winning those relays in the popular April Penn Relays in the US.
