Event Preview -
Relatively novice event worldwide that will have some talented athletes from the middle of the pack timewise beforehand move up to be very competitive with a bit of coaching in final preparation for the World Junior Champs. Also, the African powerhouses have not spilled over to this area in a big way from the flat individual events, something that will happen down the road with entry number limitations showing others this event as a route to international success with its acceptance at all levels above the Youth now.

List leader Yuliya Mochalova (Russia) is about 20 seconds ahead on the clock, but serving a two year drug suspension.  Ancuta Bobocel (Rumania) has run 9:51.13, with her runner-up effort in the 2004 World Junior Meet in Italy of 9:49.03 the #4 Junior time ever run (WJr Record is 9:30.70 by Melissa Rollison (Australia) from 2001).  Mekdes Bekele (Ethiopia) is the 2006 World Junior leader at 9:48.19 (#3 AT Junior), with Madeline Heiner (Australia) 9:56.49 this past January as the #10 All-Time Jr mark ever in the event, and another sub 10:00 clocking in 2006.

South American Sabine Heitling (Brazil) was the Pan Am Junior champ last year in a fine 10:04.71, and took the continental Junior title later in the summer.  Polina Jelizarova (Latvia) was the 2005 European Junior champ, with a 10:04.75 this July.  Emily Pidgeon (Great Britain) is the National Champ in this event at 10:06.12, and was the European Junior 5000m Champ last year in a dominating four second win at 16:14.71.  Amy Fowler (USA) was seventh in the National Collegiate Championships with a 10:08.12 clocking for Brigham Young University, with an excellent steeplechase tradition at the school.  Kenyan Mercy Kosgei (10:09.78) for second in the African Junior Championships last year, and Norwegian Karoline Bjerkeli (10:10.26) also have quick clockings.

Marie Lawrence (USA) was last year's Pan American Junior runner-up in the event, and has impressed with her ability to recover from falls, with the 10:15.26 US high school record holder possibly earning a finals spot with a super run.
