Event Preview - NO US QUALIFIERS FOR THIS EVENT - 9:35.00 World Jr Standard
Choices will probably be made about doubling (3k-5k), with the fields here adjusted significantly at the top end if some of the main actors decide on the 5000 only.  With the Africans in control of the World Cross Country Championships and yearly world lists at this level it would seem the pack of runners from Kenya and Ethiopia may have a "tag along" or two, but the dominance of that world area in these events should grow.  Only one athlete outside of Kenya and Ethiopia has broken into the top tens at the World Junior Cross-Championships in the last two years.

The Kenyans lead with the tough duo who went 1-2 in the spring Cross Country meet, with champ Pauline Korwiang, 8:42.38 (#8 AT World Junior with that mark) second in last summer's World Youth meet at the 3k distance (9:05.42).  Runner-up in the spring Cross Country Meet (with the same time as Korwiang) was Veronica Wanjiru, who was the World Youth Champ last year at 9:01.61.  Ethiopia has Belaynesh Zemedkun, who was fifth in the last two World Cross Country title runs, and raced 9:00.3 in 2005 for this distance.  Emebet Etea Bedada was seventh in the Cross-Country Championship race, and was 9:00.3 for this distance in early June of this year.  Ayalew Yimer (Ethiopia) may end up on the team, witha  9:02.35 from this May.  Japan's Yuriko Kobayashi was 8:52.33 for a National Junior Record late in 2005 and is the only other athlete in the field who has raced a pace comparable to the ebb and flow of this championship final.   The above group does not include Kenya's Yator Jebichi, the 2004 World Junior champ, who has had injuries over the last year or two.
