Event Preview -
Great sprint action was featured at the US selection meeting, with Gabby Mayo (22.88) nipping Bianca Knight (22.94), the top two junior age times in the world for 2006.  Mayo's improvement in the recent month has been amazing, with the 13.60 hurdler emerging as a flat dasher.  Knight was second in the 2005 World Youth Championships, and raced 23.06 as far back as 2004.  Cuba's Aymee Martinez was the World Youth Champ last summer with a very impressive, smooth, and powerful performance that had her edge away from Knight near the end of a 22.99 run.  She was fourth in the 2005 Junior Pan Am meet (23.38 +2.0) against girls a few years her elder last summer, and was third in the World Youth meet at 400m last year, racing 52.04.  Some others would appear to be in the "medal hunt."  Bulgarian Texdzhan Naimova has raced 23.06 this year, was seventh in last year's European Juniors at the distance, and was a competitor in the 2004 World Junior Meet at this distance.  Schillonie Calvert (Jamaica) has the bottom end speed to be competitive here, with a 23.58 early on this year and a 23.44 from last year.

A number of others should be in competitive for spots in the Finals.  Latoya King (Jamaica) was third in the 2005 World Youth Meet (23.57), with Vanda Gomes (Brazil) fifth there at 23.73.  Sheniqua Ferguson (Bahamas) was 23.44 in taking the "under 20" race in the 2006 Carifta Games, with youngster Nivea Smith from the same country 23.66 in taking the "under 17" contest there.  Chen Jue (China) was 23.52 last year and will be racing in front of the home fans.  Julianne Stolle (Germany) has raced a quick 23.39 already this year, with Anastacia Leroy (Jamaica) second in the Carifta under 20 contest at 23.54 earlier this year.  Ksenyia Vdovina (Russia) has run 23.64 this year, with Franciela Krasucki (Brazil) 23.54 last year showing the ability to make the finals in Beijing.
