Event Preview -
Strong programs from China and Russia should dominate the front end of
this contest. Vera Sokolova (Russia) was third in the 2004 World
Junior Championships, with a 43:11.34 (#4 All-Time World Junior
performer) in winning the 2005 European Junior Championship at
this distance. Yelena Ladanova (Russia) also shows up on the All-Time
World Junior list at #19 with her 45:00.1 from last June. Tatyana
Klamykova (Russia) was the World Youth 5k Champ last year at 22:14.47,
with a 45:56.34 for the 10k distance. Qin Aihua (China) was 44:08.9
last year, making her the #14 All-Time World Junior at the distance. Zhang
Xin (China) was 47:46.1, with Zhang Guangcai 48:20.1 for the distance
in 2005. Jin Jing Hie (China) had the second fastest world
youth time of 22:06.65 for the 5k distance last year, with
countrymate Xue
Chai the silver medalist in those 2005 World Youth Championships
at 22:34.28. Elmmira Alembelcova (Russia) was the 2005 World
Youth runner-up at the 5k distance at 22:27.17 (22:09.0 best),
with countrymate Oksana Kriflova 46:12.4 for 10k and 21:15.9 for
5k last year. Bulgaria's Anna Drabenya was fourth in the
2005 European Junior Championships at 46:25.25.
