Gabby Mayo and Alexandria Anderson finish the US Jr 100
Event Preview -
US Collegian Alexandria Anderson, a gold medalist in the 2004 World Junior
Championships in the 4x400 relay, showed her versatility with a 2006
world junior leading 11.12 in the US Championship run, placing her among
the top
ten all-time in World Junior history! Gabby
Mayo, American high school eleventh grader better known until a few
weeks ago as a hurdler, was a shocking 11.16 (#2 2006 World Jr) behind
Anderson, to move into the World All-time top twenty, making the US
duo very
formidable. Schillonie
Calvert of Jamaica was seventh in the 04 World Jr Meet at 100m, and
is very sharp of late, with an 11.29 for second in the Jamaican Senior
championships (11.21 in the trials). Calvert was
third to Bianca Knight (3rd in 06 US Jr Champs) in the 2005 World
Youth Championships, and anchored the Jamaican silver medal group
in the 2004 World Junior meet in Grosetto. European
Tezczhan Naimova of Bulgaria is 11.23 in June, and seems significantly
improved since a fourth place European Junior Championship meet last
summer--she has run 23.06 for 200 this summer. Anderson
and Mayo are used to the summer grind, unlike many Americans tracksters,
with the US Junior Olympic competition that often goes into August,
with Calvert
and Naimova
making
up the
other part of the foursome that should battle for the medals here.
A number of others could be in line
for Finals spots, with the World Youth Championships quickly maturing
a talented group last summer. Franciela Krasucki (Brazil) was
fourth in the Marrakech finals last summer at that level at 11.45
(11.39 heat), with a South American Jr Championship in 2005. Anika
Jno-Baptiste (Antigua) was fifth at the Youth level last year at
11.54 (with an 11.49 heat). Yomara Hinestroza (Columbia) was
a World Youth finalist with an 11.50 during the trials there.
Natalia Pohrebnyak (Ukraine) has
a quick 11.44 this year (5th in her semi-finals World Youth meet
2005), with China's Chen Jue 11.58 last year and 11.62 early this
year. Lina Grincikaite (Lithuania) was second in the 2005 European
Junior champs at 11.69 (11.62 06 best), with others of note
Sheniqua Ferguson (Bahamas) 11.63 for second in the 2006 Carifta
Games, and Emilie Gaydu (France) 11.64 this year.
