Event Preview -
This event had the top end undergo a challenge with Kenya questioning
the birthdate of Bahranian immigrant Bilal Mansour Ali, who raced
1:44.34 for seventh in the World Senior Championships after taking the World
Youth 1500m
earlier in the summer by almost seven seconds. Ali will be a dominant
force if he competes.
A group of other mid-1:47 runners
or better appear to have competitive records of the quality of Finalists
here, with a great battle for the medals! Eighteen year old
Abubaker Kaki (Sudan) blazed a 1:45.78 in early June of this year,
with the nation of Kenya having Benson Esho 1:46.53 last June (and
1:46.25 from 2004), Remi Limo (1:46.7 A 2005), and Geoffrey Rono
(1:47.10
last
September) to decide from, along with 2005 World Youth 800 champ,
Gilbert Kipkurui (1:48.42 to win there). Marcin Lewandowski
(Poland) had a huge improvement over last year's 1:48.79 best with
a 1:46.69 National Junior record run in late June of this year, with
Robin Schembera (1:47.29) and countryman Sebastian Keiner (1:47.61)
going 1-2 in the July DLV Junior meet in Germany. Fifth
placer from the 2005 European Junior Champs, Dmitrijs Jurkevics (Latvia),
was 1:47.61 for third in the DLV affair in 2006. Uganda's Jimmy
Adar was 1:48.79 last year and improved to 1:47.4 in mid June of
this year.
The depth just goes on and on here
through 1:49, with the three round event certain to be an entertaining
one.
