Men's 400m Intermediate Hurdles Preview - prepared 7/11/06

(rt) Chris Carter has had a super first year at BYU with Joe Greene
as impressive from the NY State University at Albany

Event Preview -
American Chris Carter (Brigham Young University) shocked with his first year of college running, going from a 38.04 clocking (most US high schools run the 300 meter intermediate (36' .914m) for the 300 Intermediates last year while in high school to 49.19 for the full 400 meter distance this year for third in the very competitive Division I National Collegiate Championships.  Carter has run at least six sub 50.50's this year and appears very resilient.  Josef Robertson of Jamaica has fine credentials, with a 51.33 best from as far back as 2004 with a 50.24 and Carifta and National Junior Championship efforts this 2006 season.  Joe Greene (US), another with a short, impressive history in the event, was a 47.93 flat 400 runner and 23-08.75 (7.23m) Long Jumper as a high schooler last year, with a 50.52 best in his first serious year in the 400 hurdles and semi-final spot in the National Collegiate Champonships for his University at Albany.  National Junior Champs Stanislav Melnykov (Ukraine) 50.73, Juan Bloem (South Africa) 50.78 at altitude, and Yu Zipei (China) 50.88 in early July show fine potential, with 2005 World Youth Champ Abdulgadir Idriss (Sudan) (84 cm hurdles at 50.78) had a 2005 best of 50.84 over the higher Intermediate barriers.   This will be a very deep and challenging event to secure a spot in the finals with about ten others between 51.00 and 51.50 on the clock in the last year!
