Men's 400 Preview - prepared 7/9/06

Justin Oliver and Quentin Summers
carry US Hopes into the World Junior 400m

Event Preview -
Great Britain's Martyn Rooney shocked with his improvement from a 46.47 05 best and 4th in the European Junior Championships last year at 46.56 to a fifth place effort in the early 2006 Commonwealth Games in March, placing 5th in the Finals at 45.51 and recording 45.69 and 45.35 during the early rounds there (he has at least 5 sub 46.02's this year)!  Yuzo Kanemaru (Japan) is the National Senior champ at 45.74 and has a 45.41 from the Osaka Grand Prix Meet (2nd), with nice progression the last two years (45.47 2005 best, 45.89 2004 best).  Quentin Summers, the US Champ, is from the Baylor University program of famed Coach Clyde Hart, with a 46.02 to win the US qualifier and strong competitive spring that included participation on a third place finishing NCAA 4x400 relay squad and third place in the very competitive Big 12 Collegiate conference.  Second in that conference finals was the US runner-up, Justin Oliver, a fierce competitor from Texas A&M University, with a 45.95 best, at least five sub 46.25's this year, and the 2005 Pan American Junior 400m Championship under his belt.  Others appearing to show the ability to compete for medals are Jamaica's Edino Steele, 45.81 during a Community College season in the US (and national under 20 championship run of 46.60), 45.82 star Rennie Quow (Trinidad), the 2006 Carifta Games Champ, and Fiji's Niko Verekauta, a Commonwealth Games Semi-Finalist with a 46.28 best from earlier this year.  From the ranks of the 2005 World Youth Meet are champion Adam Mohamed Al-Noor (Sudan), with a46.56 run there, and youngster Julius Kirwa (89 birthdate), who was 46.47 earlier this spring.
