Event Preview -
A high quality event, the Steeplechase has a definite African-Mediterranean
flavor to it, but there are five different nations with athletes
at this age level who have run under 8:27 in the last year or slightly
more. Kenya again has some choices to make, with five athletes
(four under 8:30 and 2005 World Youth 2k runner-up Abel Kiprob
Mutai 5:24.69 there) to pick two from. The age
controversy over
05 World Youth Champion Tareq Mubarak Taher, who changed nationality
from Kenya to Bahrain, and has run 8:11.36, five seconds ahead
of everyone here on the clock, is in the background a month out
from the competition. 2004 World Youth Champ in 8:23.32 (8:18.51
04 best) was 8:16.69 last year (#9 All Time World Junior, with
seven sub-8:25's), with Bisluke Kiplagat (Kenya) third in the 2006
World
Junior Cross-Country
meet
and third in the 05 World Youth 2k Steeple, has run 8:21.82 this
June. Justus Kiprono (Kenya) has an 8:25.72 best from this
June, with an 8:19.63 2004 best, with that nation also possibly
drawing on Willy Rutto Komen, 8:35.82 from last year, and World
Youth Runner-up at the 2k distance at 5:24.69. Ali Ahmed
Al-Amri (Saudi Arabia) has run 8:21.87 this June, with Marocco's
Abdelghani Ait Bahmad 8:23.91 the same month, and he was fourth
in that hot 2005 World Youth Steeple final. Nahom Mesfin
Tariku is one of the Ethiopian team headliners, with an 8:26.20
this year. The above mentioned are thirteen seconds ahead
of the rest of the field on the clock.
