Event Preview -
Another strong sprint event will be this half lap dash, with a solid group competing for the medals!  American Willie Perry was fifth in the US National Collegiate championships with a 20.42 best on the way to his 20.70 US qualifying meet win, with no less than at least half a dozen clockings at or better than that 20.70 during the spring season.  Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Great Britain) was the 2005 World Youth Champ at 20.91 with seemingly the ability to run whatever it took to win last summer at that level.  He was 21.07 in Germany July 8th of this year.  Christopher Dykes (US) was a US National Collegiate Finalist with a 20.87 runner-up effort in the US Junior qualifying race.  He had a number of solid competitive efforts during his college season, second in the very tough Big 12 Conference Meet and fifth in his NCAA Regional competition, usually against much older athletes.  Jorge Valcarel (Cuba) was the 2005 World Youth runner-up over a half-lap (21.08), and if he can run the turn he can be very strong here--he has 20.95 and 20.5w (hand-timed) 2006 bests.  2004 100 Meter Junior World Medalist Remaldo Rose (Jamaica) has run 20.91 this spring, with Yuzo Kanemaru (Japan) 20.79 last year and 20.71 already this summer.

Great Britain's Alex Nelson was a fine 20.69 in 2005 for this event, with Edino Steele (Jamaica) 20.75 for a best during a United States Community College season for Pasadena City College in the Los Angeles area.  Wilhelm van der Vyver (South Africa) has run 20.91A this spring, with Allodin Fothergill (Jamaica) 20.91, and Visa Hongisto (Finland) 20.99 (06) and fourth last year in the European Junior Champs.  Matteo Galvan (Italy) hopes to follow in the footsteps of countryman and 2004 World Junior Champ Andrew Howe, with a third place in last year's World Youth meet (21.14).
