Women's 400 Meter Hurdles Heats

First Round

First Three in Each Heat Plus Next Four Fastest Qualify for Semifinals

HEAT ONE—Corri-Ann Campbell-Fell of Canada led for the first 300 before Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica, who ranks second on the world junior list, passed her in the final straight to win, 57.49 to 58.00. Lauren Boden of Australia just edged Perri Shakes-Drayton of Great Britain to grab the final automatic spot, 57.95 to 58.00.

HEAT TWO—Sherene Pinnock of Jamaica led from start to finish and Anestasiya Ott was a comfortable second, 57.39 to 58.12. Hui Wang of China was third in 59.42 and Giesele Cruz of Brazil was fourth in 59.48.

HEAT THREE—Nicole Leach of the U.S. and UCLA, the world junior leader at 55.35, ran cautiously and still managed a win with a time of 57.27. Frederike Schonfeld of Germany was second in 58.60 and Darya Korableva of Russia just edged Sara Petersen of Denmark for the final automatic qualifing spot, 58.88 to 58.89.

HEAT FOUR—Ebony Collins of the U.S. and Wilson High in Long Beach, California, the World Youth Champion, had her hands full with Ajoke Odumosu of Nigeria, who led the entire way, run 57.11 for the fastest time of the first round. Collins finished second with a seasonal best of 57.35. Muna Adam of Sudan was third at 57.55. Also advancing on time were Laetitia Denis of France at 58.48 and Tina Polak of Poland at 59.14.
