Championships Men's 400 meters Heats First Round First Two in Each Event Plus the Next Two Fastest Qualify for the Semifinals HEAT ONE—Renny Quow of Trinidad and Tobacco, the Central American and Caribbean champ probably ran a little faster then he wanted to because running one lane outside of him was Julius Kirwa of Kenya who had a very fast first 300 before Quow pulled away to win, 45.91 to 46.23. Kirwa’s time was a personal best and Quow missed his personal best by .09 seconds. Dmitriy Buryak of Russia was third in 47.27. HEAT TWO—Endo Steele of Jamaica and Pasadena City College in California blazed the first 200 and had little trouble-winning in 46.29. Reza Bouazar of Iran was second at 47.24 and Virendra Pankaj of India was third at 47.60.

and Pasadena CC 46.59 Heat 2 winner Heat 2 - Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 11:47 HEAT THREE—Martyn Rooney of Great Britain, who is the European Junior champion and finished third at the Commonwealth Games this past spring in Australia, controlled the entire race, looking around the final 100 meters before finishing in 46.25. Victor Isaiah of Nigeria was second in 46.25 and Alex Bubner of Australia was third at 47.46. As an aside Rooney could almost be a double for California high school hurdler David Klech who has run 13.64 and 50.35. HEAT FOUR—Quentin Summers of the U.S. and Baylor University, running
in lane eight, was content to led Alvin Samuels have the lead before taking
the win, 47.24 to 47.49. Lazslo Bartha of Hungary was third in 47.88.

Silvester Meli of Kenya was third in 47.04.

Niko Verekauta of Fiji was third in 47.30. HEAT EIGHT—Justin Oliver of the U.S. and Texas A&M, led from start
to finish, with an eased up 46.86. Yannick Fonsat of France closed hard for
second in 47.24 and Dylan Grant of Australia was third in 47.40..
