NORTH'S 4x4 HEATS UP THE FLYING TIGER WITH A 3:15
Seven meet records go down, Long Beach Wilson
dominates the girls meet with nine titles

On a day when it seemed like the weather was
determined to cool off any hope of a super-heated
performance, Riverside John W. North's boys
1,600-meter relay team ignited the crowd at Saturday's
Flying TIger Invitational at San Jacinto High School.

Even with Long Beach Wilson's girls in the field, the
dour weather kept things chilled -- especially the
performances. However, North's boys ran wild in the
1,600-meter relay with a seasonal best mark of
3:15.23. That performance demolished the stadium and
meet records by more than eight seconds.

Led by Nevin Gutierrez, who won the 400, the Huskies
exploded in the secoind and third legs. The mark was
among the fastest in the state and nation this year.

It was a bit surprising considering how it got
progressively colder and omnious as the day wore on.

Wilson did deliver with a record-setting effort in the
girls division. The Bruins won a record nine
championships, claiming the 100, 200, 400, 800, 100
hurdles, 300 hurdles and both relays. Cherel White
capped Wilson's day with a victory in the triple jump.

DeAna Carson and Ebony Collins won two events each.
Collins tied the meet and stadium record in the 300
hurdles with a 42.70 clocking and she edged Carson in
the 100 meters (11.94-11.95). Carson defeated Collins
in the 100 hurdles and she won the 200 -- an event she
won here back in 2003 when she was a freshman at
Moreno Valley's Vista Del Lago.

Carson and Collins shared athlete of the meet for the
track events for their efforts.

The Bruins also got a victory in the 800 from senior
Paula Parker (2:21). The 400-meter relay team set a
meet and stadium record with a 46.84 performance and
Wilson's depth showed in the 1,600-meter relay with a
3:53.19 performance.

Sarah Robles was not to be outdone on the done and
became the first girl to repeat as champion in the
shot put and the discus. Robles had a personal-best
performance in the shot put with a toss of 44-feet --
good for a stadium and meet record. Robles was off
her seasonal and national-leading best in the discus,
but was still good enough to win with a record-setting
mark of 140-feet

Temescal Canyon and Yucca Valley ended their
championship droughts in the girls' meet with
victories. Temescal Canyon's Jana Basubas won the
1,600 with a 5:16.77 clocking -- just ahead of
Corona's Alma Escobar. Basubas' win was the Titans'
first girls win since 2002.

Yucca Valley's Katarina Ratkowiak was part of a very
successful day for the Trojans. Ratkowiak ended the
Trojans' nine-year drought in the girls division with
a win in the 3,200 (11:33.26), which marked the first
time since 1995 that a Yucca Valley girl had won at
that distance.

Karyn Dunn of Diamond Ranch won the long jump with a
mark of 18-7. El Capitan's Brandi Hines rounded out
the girls winners with a mark of 9-feet in the pole
vault.

In the boys meet, Diamond Ranch's Terry Prentice stole
the show with one of the most impressive performances
in meet history. Prentice defeated a solid field in
the 110-meter high hurdles with a record-setting 14.30
performance. He then followed that up with a 23-7 mark
to win the long jump -- also a meet and stadium
record.

Prentice's final individual accomplishment was an
impressive win in the 300 hurdles (38.83), which was
just off the meet and stadium records.

The Diamond Ranch junior became just the third boy in
the meet's history to claim three titles in a single
meet. Prentice also tied Murrieta Valley's Justin
Nelson for the most individual titles in the meet's
history with five.

For all of his efforts, Prentice was named the athlete
of the meet in the track events, while Rancho Verde's
Josh Como earned athlete of the meet honors in the
field events with a victory and record-setting effort
in the triple jump (46-8).

The hometown crowd was buzzing early when San
Jacinto's DeShawn Smith anchored the Tigers past
Colton in the 400-meter relay. The Tigers ran a
school-record best of 42.59, with a very potent Colton
squad there also at 43.05. North's 4x1 was in the lead
on the final exchange but botched the final handoff,
which cleared the way for San Jacinto and Colton.

Smith really got things going in the 200 with a huge
surge in the final 40 meters to defeat North's Ennis
Jones and Valley View's Bryan Williams, both of whom
had edged Smith in the 100 earlier in the day. Smith's
22.02 clocking was his fastest at San Jacinto and the
No. 2 performance run at the stadium ever. With the
victory, Smith also became the first repeat 200 champ
in the meet's history.

Yucca Valley had its best day since 2001 with three
champioships. The Trojans got a win in the shot put
from Xerxes Griffin (52-3 1/2), a big-win in the 1,600
from Michael Crouch, who ran a seasonal best mark of
4:23, and Josh Moricillo shared the discus title with
Hemet's Andy Richards (157-9 1/2).

Riverside Poly, making its debut at the meet, was not
disappointed when Ryan Rhenke won the 800 (1:59.14).

Chaparral's Ian Iverson was the winner in the 3,200
meters with a 9:53 clocking.

North's other two victories came from Gutierrez in the
400 (48.23) and Tim Sebastian in the high jump (6-4).
