Duarte HS senior Mohamed Trafeh
runs nation's fastest 10k on the track
by a high schooler in 28 years!!!

            POMONA -- Duarte High School senior Mohamed Trafeh gave his hometown fans an eye-popping treat on Saturday evening, running the fastest 10k-on-the-track by a high schooler in more than a quarter century!
            Trafeh, competing at the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational (situated a mere 10-minute drive from his house) against mostly collegians, stunned the small crowd with a superb 29 minute, 54.8-second clocking to win the 25-lap race by more than a full minute, well ahead of NCAA Division II All-American Daniel Rojas. The time was also the fastest in the nation by any prep on the track since a trio of runners broke 29:10 way back in 1976.

            Trafeh's official time is surrounded by intrigue for the coming outdoor season as his effort moved him into 7th place on the all-time national high school 10k track performers list, a group which includes many of the fastest prep eight-lap runners in U.S. prep history:

            Trafeh's next notable effort figures to be March 13th at the Southern California-based Irvine Invitational, where a group of leading Southland runners will take aim at the rarely-run 2,000-meter outdoor distance, in search of what many experts consider the softest boys' national outdoor record. Californian Eric Hulst originally set the record at 5:23.3 in 1976, with New Yorker Michael O'Connor then matching it with a 5:23.30 effort 10 years later. The pace breaks down to 64.65 for five laps, or a 4:18.6 pace for 1600 meters held for an additional lap. Chances are now good that record will fall.
