Heat one (wind +1.6 meters per second)—Hank Palmer of Canada held a small advantage over Andrew Howe of Italy for much of the race but in the last 30 meters Howe put on a burst of speed to gain the victory in a national junior record of 20.72. Palmer finished second in 20.81 and Daniel Grueso of Colombia was third in 21.07.

Heat Two (+0.3)—Leigh Julius of South Africa had little trouble and was never challenged in winning with a 20.84. Jamil James of Trinidad came out of the pack late to take second in a personal best of 20.97 and Marcus Duncan, also of Trinidad, was third in 21.23 just edging Nesta Carter of Jamaica, who ran 21.24.

Heat Three (+1.0)—Carey Lacour (U.S., Houston, Humble HS, Tx.), running in lane one, got off to a good start but found himself in fourth place behind Rikki Fifton and Julian Thomas, both of Great Britain and Samuel Adade of Ghana and was never able to recover finishing seventh in 21.61. Thomas and Fifton finished one-two in 20.86 and 20.90, respectively and Adade grabbed third in 21.07.

200 METERS
First Round
First Three in Each Heat Plus Next Six Fastest Qualify For Semifinals

Heat One (wind +2.3 meters per second)—The tall long striding Julian Thomas of Great Britain, who has a legal best of 21.19, made it look easy winning in 20.93. Hiroyuki Noda of Japan was even with Thomas at 100 meters and finished second in 21.00 just off of his legal best of 20.88 and Jocobi Mitchell of Bahamas was third in 21.34.

Heat Two (+2.5)—Mohamed Sanad Al-Rasheedi of Bahrain entered the straight slightly behind Martial Mbandjock of France but pulled out the win as both athletes were timed in 21.17. Visa Hongisto of Finland, who got up to second 10 meters from the finish, fell back to third in 21.20 and Daniel Grueso of Colombia was fourth in 21.27.

Heat Three (+1.2)—Florian Rentz of Germany moved from third to first over the final 15 meters to win in a personal best of 21.19. Marcus Duncan of Trinidad, who was just being Nesta Carter of Jamaica, entering the straight, got up for second in 21.20 while Carter dropped to fourth in 21.28, just behind Anton Koroets of Russia, who was third in 21.26.

Heat Four (+0.9)—Andrew Howe of Italy, who won the long jump on Tuesday at 26-7½, got out of the blocks well and after a tentative second half of the curve, cruised down the straight to win easily in 20.86. Howe, who missed all of last year with a broken right foot, just started back training in January, put on his spikes for the first time in April and had his first competition (long jump) in May. This was his first serious 200 of the year. Prior to his injury last year, Howe had run the 100 in 10.48 at age 16, the 200 in 20.91 at 17 and triple jumped 53-4 ½, also at age 17. Carey Lacour (U.S., Houston) was second in 21.18 and Jamil James of Trinidad was third in 21.43.

Heat Five (+1.3)—Leigh Julius of South Africa won as pleased in 20.91 with Graeme Read of New Zealand second in 21.43 and Yordan Ilinov of Bulgaria third at 21.46.

Heat Six (+1.9)—Hank Palmer of Canada had the early lead but was caught by Rikki Fifton of Britain. Both finished in 20.99 with Fifton getting the nod. Marcus Pugh (U.S., Jenks HS, Ok.) was third entering the straight but could not make a dent in the top two’s advantage finishing in 21.20.

1,500 METERS
Final

David Torrance (U.S., California, Loyola HS, Los Angeles) ran the race of his life with splits of 57.2, 2:00.8 and 3:03.2, finished with a personal best of 3:43.62 and was rewarded with an eighth-place finish, the third-best U.S.1500m finish ever at these championships and the fastest American time ever at the World Junior Championships. Only Jason Pyrah, fifth in 1988 in 3:47.94, and Gabe Jennings, fifth in 1998 with a 3:43.94, have placed higher. So why was it so fast? Just check out what was happening up front. Kenyan’s Benson Esho went through the first 400 in 54.70 and then was joined by teammate Brimin Kipruto as the two passed 800 in 1:52.84. Shortly thereafter Moroccan’s Abdelati Iguider and Mohamed Moustaoui joined the top two the group of four all within two meters passed 1,200, in 2:54.14. With 200 remaining, Iguider, Esho and Kipruto were three across the track and virtually even. On the run in Iguider pulled away to win in 3:35.53, the fastest Junior time in the world this year, Esho was second at 3:35.80 and Kipruto was third in 3:35.96. Moustaoui finished fourth in 3:37.44.

Semifinals
First Four in Each Heat Qualify For Final

Heat One—Yasser Lismet of Cuba and Ibrahim Al-Hamaidi of Saudi Arabia got off together and were stride for stride for the first 200 before Al-Hamaidi gained the advantage around the turn and held a five meter lead that he lengthened to eight before letting off 10 meters from the finish to win in a personal best of 49.55. Richard Davenport of Britain and Diego Venacio of Brazil caught Lismont in the latter stages of the race to finish in 50.20 and 50.85 for second and third, respectively. Lismont was fourth in 50.96.

Heat Two—This heat was loaded with the top four Juniors in the world—Kerron Clement (U.S., Florida, La Porte HS, Tx.), Brandon Johnson (U.S., UCLA, West Orange-Stark HS, Orange, Tx.), and Louis Van Zyl and Wouter Le Roux, both of South Africa. Clement and Johnson were very close after 200 before first Johnson balked at the seventh hurdle and then Clement did the same at the eighth hurdle. Johnson recovered better than Johnson to win, 49.01 to 49.78. Defending champion Van Zyl was third at 50.11 and Le Roux, the World Youth Champion, was fourth in 50.23. El Hadji Seth Mbow of Senegal was fifth in a national junior record of 50.68. Had Mbow been in the first heat with that time he would have qualified for the final.

HIGH JUMP
Final

Canadian Juniors and the high jumping really get along well together as evidenced by Michael Mason winning just the countries second ever men’s gold medal with a first time clearance of 7-3. Canada’s other gold was also in the high jump when Mark Boswell won in 1996. Mason flirted with disaster early in the competition when he needed three attempts to clear both 6-10¾ and 7-0¼. Marius Hanniske of Germany was second, Tong Hu was third, Karl Thornblad of Sweden was fourth and Ramsay Carelse of South Africa was fifth, all at 7-3, with placed decided on misses.

First Two in Each Heat Plus Next Two Fastest Qualify For Final

Heat One (wind +0.7 meters per second)—Shana Cox (U.S., Penn St., Holy Trinity HS, Hicksville, N.Y.) got off to a poor start and found herself in fourth coming off the turn. She ran a strong straight but came up just short of gaining an automatic qualifying spot, finishing third by one one-hundredth of a second behind Aurelie Kamga of France, 23.89 to 23.90, but she did advance as one of the two fastest losers. Nickesha Anderson of Jamaica, a finalist two years ago in Jamaica, won pretty much as she pleased in 23.55.

Heat Two (+0.7)—Shalonda Solomon (U.S., Poly HS, Long Beach, Ca.) found herself down by about two feet to Kelly-Ann Batiste of Trinidad but easily pulled away for the win in 23.13 with Batiste running 23.53 for second. Sara Battke of Germany was third in 24.23 and Sari Keskitalo of Finland was fourth in 24.48.

Heat Three (+0.5)—Anneisha McLaughlin of Jamaica had control of the race the entire time, winning in 23.41 and will now get a chance to move up one place from her second place finish two years ago. Seyi Omojuwa of Nigeria was in second for all by the final meters when Maike Dix of Germany grabbed the the final automatic qualifying spot in 23.76. Omojuwa finished third in 23.81 and also advanced.

Elisa Hakamaki of Finland was second in a personal best of 13.70 and Keisha Brown of Jamaica was third in 13.93.

Heat Three (+0.4)—Shantia Moss (U.S., Pompano Beach, Fl.) got out well, looked a little ragged over hurdles, but win easily in 13.46 for her second best performance of the year. Yelena Bandina of Russia just edged Cindy Billaud of France, 13.74 to 13.75, with Bandina getting a personal best.

Heat Four (+0.2)—Sabrina Altermatt of Switzerland, who has a personal best of 13.39, found herself in fifth at the half way point but got up to win the closest heat of the round in 13.54. Christina Vukicevic of Norway was second in 13.56, Monique Morgan of Jamaica was third in 13.59, Carolin Nytra of Germany was fourth in 13.60 and Alice Decaux of France was fifth in 13.62. 400-METER LOW HURDLES
Final

Katya Kostetskaya of Russia, the European Junior champion last year when she was a high school student at Jonesboro (Ark.), had little trouble after overcoming a slow start and finished first with a personal best of 55.55 for fastest Junior time in the world this year. Nicole Leach (U.S., West Catholic HS, Philadelphia) was up with the leaders early but fell back to fourth around the final turn. She fought back but came up just short of a medal, finishing in with personal best of 57.56, just two one-hundredths behind Jamaica’s Sherene Pinnock, who clocked 57.54 in finishing third. Zuzana Hejnova of Czech Republic, who defeated Kostetskaya last year in the World Youth Championships, was second in a national junior record of 57.44. Kostetskaya’s time qualifies her for the Russian Olympic trails but that may be her has 400 hurdles race for a while as her coach Tatyana Bell (Earl’s wife) indicated that she will move back to the 800 next year. In 2003 she ran 2:05.96 in winning the AOC meet in Raleigh, N.C. for the fastest U.S. high school time of the year.
