Keith Hinnant: (400m) University of South Carolina-bound: -- "I came out nervous in the beginning, as this is my first international competition. My nerves went away at the start because I knew I just had to make the top three to qualify for the next round. I tried to maintain phases and work off the people in front of me so I could pace myself. I'd rather work off the other athletes than them work off of me."

Marcus Mayes (800m) University of Missouri: -- "The race was really physical at first, which was something I was not expecting. I really wanted to set the pace through the 200 and 400 meters, but I allowed the physical part of the race through my rhythm off. It was a learning and growing experience given the conditions, I think I did well. I'm glad to be here."

Former Loyola HS (CIF-SS) distance standout David Torrence has been
doing some major damage his freshman season at UC Berkeley, including
a 4:04 mile there. Today, David was "representin' " , as they say, taking
fourth in his 1500m heat in a lifetime-best 3:46.60! Above, David (dark
hair, in the foreground) observed the action while donning Team USA gear!

Heat One—A group of 10 including Russell Brown (U.S., Stanford) was content to run 59.26, 2:02.60 and 3:03.65 before Abdelati Iguider of Morocco strung out the field to win in 3:43.96. Antar Zerguelaine of Algeria second in 3:46.07 and Benson Esho of Kenya third in 3:46.46. Brown was able to move up from ninth to sixth on the final lap to finish in 3:49.02.

Heat Two—Sultan Khamis Zaman of Qutar and Brimin Kipruto of Kenya took the field out and remained in that order the entire way running, 3:42.08 and 3:42.31. During the latter stages of the race they were joined by Thomas Lanchaster of Great Britain and Michael Woods, who finish third and fourth at 3:42.48 and 3:42.49, respectively. David Torrence (U.S., California, Loyola HS, Los Angeles) was in the top group of six for the first three laps then briefly fell back to eight before making a late charge to finish fourth in 3:46.60. Torrence earned the last spot to the final, having the same time -- 3:46.60 -- as the fastest nonqualifier, but advancing by thousandths of a second. David was #2 on his HS team to Mark Matusak ... and now he's in the World Juniors Final!

Heat Three --Mohamed Boustaoui of Morocco was the race winner in 3:45.43 and Barnabas Bene of Hungary, with a great finish was second in 3:45.83 and Aissa Dahmar of Algeria was third in 3:46.60.

SHOT PUT
12 Qualify for Final (now posted above)

Justin Clickett (U.S.), putting in Group A, had his best effort with the 5-kilo junior implement (just under 11 pounds) in the first round at 60-8 and that was just good enough to be the 12th and final qualifier. Georgi Ivanov of Bulgaria (64-5 ¼), Kyle Helf of Canada (61-8 ½), who was second in the 2003 World Youth Championships, and Jakub Giza of Poland (61-8 ½) were the top three Group B qualifiers. Cory Martin (U.S., Auburn) flirted with dangers as he fouled his first two puts before hitting 61-4 that made him the 9th best qualifier overall. Seyed Mahdi Shahrokhi of Iran (64-10 ¾), Aleksander Grekov of Poland (62-5) and Piotr Golba of Poland (62-1) were the top three qualifiers in Group B.

the cobwebs and jitters during her first-round sprint

Heat One (wind -0.1)—Jasmine Baldwin (U.S., Bishop Amat. La Puente, Ca.) had the second worse start and then compounded that by coming upright three steps out of the blocks thus leaving her in last place after twenty meters. From then on Baldwin just picked her way through the field until five meter from the finish she passed Sally McLellan (check spell in morning this is right) to win, 11.46 to 11.49. For McLellan it was a personal best. Wenshan Wang of China just nipped Verena Sailer of Germany for third, 11.68 to 11.69. Heat Two (+0.6)—Ashley Owens (Liberty HS, Colorado Springs, Colo.), display the same almost perfect start the allowed to set the U.S. high school 60-meter indoor record of 7.19 earlier this year, blasted away from the field and was never challenged in winning 11.35 for the fastest time of the day. Schillonie Calvet of Jamaica just edged Lucy Sargent of Great Britain for second as both clocked 11.77. Wanda Hutson of Triniday and Iwona Brzezinska of Poland were out fastest with Hutson holding a slight advantage at 50 meters. Brzezinska then began to fade and Hutson went on to win in 11.60. Lina Jacques-Sebastien of France closed with a rush to finish second in 11.74.

Jasmine Baldwin (100m SF) Mt. SAC College-bound: -- "I really wasn't thinking about much besides focusing on the finish line. My start does need work, but if I'm trailing I always seem to find myself coming back into the race. I don't panic. When I panic, I get tight and don't run as well. I'm not a quitter. I'm a finisher."

Ashley Owens (100m SF) UNLV-bound: -- "I'm trying to break the record this week (WJR record is 10.88, set in 1977 by Marlies Oelsner-Gohr; AJR is 11.04, by Angela Williams in 1999) and I wanted to run faster in the semis than I did this morning. I was not as focused this morning as I am now. I slowed down after the first 60 meters to save energy when I should have ran all out. I tend to shut down when I'm in front."

Caitlin Chock, en route to the national record!

5,000 METERS
Final

If you can run a controlled and gusty race at the same time that is exactly what Caitlin Chock (U.S., Granite Bay HS, Ca.) did. She started out in 15th place and had moved to 13th place at 1,600—that was the bad news—the good news was that she passed in that point in 5:01.8. Chock then began a relentless drive that resulted in a national high school record of 15:52.88 breaking her own record of 16:10.60 set in the national junior championships. Along the way Chock clocked 9:24.1 for 3,000 meters and 10:02.1 for 3,200. To put Chock’s 3,200 time in prospective it is the sixth fastest high school performance of all-time, and she still had 1,800 meters to run. Her personal best of 9:58.51 run in winning the Golden West Invitational ranked third on the All-time high school list. Chock continued to roll and eventually pulled herself into fourth place before tiring slightly to finish fifth with the finest U.S. distance performance ever in World Junior Championship competition. The race was won by Meselech Melkamu of Ethiopia in 15:21.52 with Catherine Chikwakwa of Malawi was second in 15:36.22, Chiaki Iwomoto of Japan was third in 15:39.59 and Weiwei Sun of China was fifth in 15:52.88.

12 Qualify For Final

Yvette Lewis (U.S., Notre Dame), competing in Group A, opened up with a 41-11 and improved to 42-6 in the third round but that left her almost 10 inches short of the automatic qualify mark of 43-3 ¾ which was reached by all twelve finalists. Limei Xie of China (44-10 ¾), Cristina Bujin of Romania and Anastasiya Taranova of Russia (both 44-2) were the leading qualifiers from Group A. Erica McLain (U.S., East HS, Plano, Tx.), jumping last in Group B leaped 41-10 ¾, which left her six after the first round but a second-round 43-7 ¾ exceeded the automatic qualifying standard and guaranteeing her a place in the final. Tatyana Yakovleva of Russia (44-1), Yudelkis Fernandez of Cuba (44-0 ¾ and Huijing Qui of China (43-10 ½) were the top qualifiers from Group B.
