West Torrance HS 4/2-3/04

Men’s

Sprints
Dionte Harvey of North Torrance was the Small School Boys 100 champ at Long
Beach Relays 2 weeks ago, 11.03 here last year on dirt. Ryan Martin is the
clear favorite in the 400 with a 49.3 clocking in the first week of the
season. Martin has also clocked 22.2 in the 200. Others to watch include
Davon Brown, South Torrance, Anthony Bell, Lawndale, and Brent Gray,
Gardena.

Distance
Chris Chavez, Santa Monica may be the biggest favorite in the meet here
coming off a 4:19 full mile clocking at Stanford this weekend, he steps down
to 800 where his PR is over a 4 seconds faster than anyone else in the
field. The 1600 minus Chavez is probably the most competitive event on the
Men’s side. Yermie Cohen, Santa Monica ran 4:26 for a full mile at Stanford
last weekend as Damon Ferrara, South Torrance split 4:23 on a relay carry
the same day, but then finished third to Adrian Doty’s of Peninsula second
in the open 1600. Ferrara will battle with Matt Truong, West Torrance to
start the meet in the 3200.

Hurdles
Jeff Eda, Peninsula, has run 15.65 auto to finish second at San Pedro Easter
Relays and Phillip Cannon, West Torrance debuted at 15.6 returning from
injury last week, while Robert Collins and Mike Jones from North Torrance
are also ones to watch. The same athletes should contest the Intermediates
including South Torrance’s David Rosen.

Relays
In the 4x1 North Torrance was 43.82 at San Pedro Easter Relays and Culver
City was 42.3 last year, with speedy footballers Armon DeLauney and
Adarrious Ross looks to be a great race.
In the 4x4 6 teams look to dip under 3:30.

Jumps
With at least 5 kids over 21 in the Long Jump and 43 in the Triple Jump
someone is going to need a great day to win. In the Pole Vault Doug
Waybright from South went 14-6 indoors and in the High Jump Tim McGrath was
6-8 last year, both clear cut favorites.

Throws
The Shot Put should be highly contested with 7 listed over 49, but the disk
belongs to Kevin Hornesby of Santa Monica with a mark over 158 and no one
else listed over 140.

Women’s

Sprints
Gardena brings the big guns here with last year’s Frosh Phenom Myra Hasson,
now a Soph and Crystal Steen. Hasson has already clocked a 54.45 in the 400
and Steen a 12.34 in the 100.

Distance
Peninsula, Peninsula, Peninsula! That’s right there are 3 of them. The group
of Olga Aulet-Leon, Brooke Lademan and Brittany Morreale has all clocked
under 5:13 for the 1600 and 11:15 for the 3200. Olga Aulet-Leon is the
headliner with times of 5:03 and 11:10 coming in, will one of her teammates
step up to challenge her or will they be content with a 1-2-3 finish. Other
notables competing include Laura Mickelson, Mira Costa, Alison Kielty, West
Torrance and Alex Salinas, South Torrance.

Hurdles
The hurdles are a toss up with 4 coming in at under 16 in the 100 hurdles
and 4 under 48 in the 300 hurdles. The list includes Denielle Moore,
Morningside, Sasha Edwards, South Torrance, Lindsay Carter, West Torrance,
Lauren Kahn, Endurha Patten, and Ezine Chukwudi, all of Gardena.

Relays
Gardena is the clear cut favorite in both relays with the battle for second
looking to be between West Torrance and Westchester.

Jumps
West Torrance and Gardena both have 2 over 35 in the Triple Jump with
Shirley Knight the only one over 36. In the Long Jump Knight and Peninsula’s
Nonye Okonkwo have both jumped in the 17’s this year, but Gardena’s Steen is
the only one to hit the 18 foot mark. Peninsula’s Ana Papadakis is the
defending champ and meet record holder in the Pole Vault and looks to raise
the bar to a new record. With 4 girls over 5 feet in the High Jump
Torrance’s Julia Drischler and South’s Edwards are the only ones to clear
5’2”. Who will win and will someone take Julia Pitts’ meet record of 5’5”
with her?

Throws
Jennifer Eciso, Mira Costa, has clearly outdistanced the pack with throws
over 120. Enciso should get some good competition in the Shot Put however
from Gardena’s Courtney Johnson and West Torrance’s Theriana Loftin.
