35 Schools and over 1500 athletes Boys Events: Boys Shot and Discus: This year we have an outstanding field with following athletes scheduled to compete. Zack Lloyd (White Pine, Ely Nevada) is ranked #1 in the nation with a 67’4” shot put. Goals this season is to be a 3-time state champ, throw over seventy feet and break into the US high school all-time top 10 list. Zack is also a 190’ discus thrower. Leif Arrhenius (Mt. View, Utah) is the nation record holder in the indoor weight throw 82’11” he is also ranked # 1 in the nation in the Discus with a best of 209’6” along with a 64’3” shot put. Leif’s brother holds the national record in the discus. Not confirmed at this time but Dan Schaerer (California) also may be in attendance and threw 200’6” two weeks ago and is also a top shot putter. In local talent Ryan McKinley (Reno, Nevada) is the defending 4A champion in the shot put and threw a best of over 57’ this season. Both meet and stadium records held by former national record holder, Kami Keshmiri in 1987 may fall. Long Jump and Pole Vault: In the jumps, Devon Jones (Grant, CA) is back to defend his LJ title. If he jumps near his seed mark of 23’7” he’ll challenge both meet and stadium records. In the pole vault Jordan Savidge (Smith Valley) has jumped 15’3” this year and is on target to challenge both the meet and stadium record. Distance: In the distances 800, 1000, 3200, we’ll see a strong
group of runners with Jonathan Cardenas, Stephen Pottey, Kevin Sandall,
and Joe Parker. Cardenas (Reno) ran a 9:08 3200 indoors (second at the
Nike indoor) and is the state champion in the 3200 and cross country
and will the 800 along with relay duty. Pottey (Galena) ran a 4:12 mile
(fastest Nevadan in 12 years) to win Stanford Invitational last week
to become nationally ranked and also is the defending state champion.
Kevin Sandall (Elko) will push both with his untapped talent along with
10th grader Joe Parker (Reno High School and National JO Cross Country
age group champion). Sprints: Defending champ in 100 and 200 B.J. Triplett (Mt. Eden, CA) returns along with teammate Cherrelle Garrett, Dezairae Long (Reno) and Benita Jones (Grant, CA). All athletes are capable of a new meet and stadium records. Distance: In the 800 Mel Lawrence (Reno High School; 2nd in the Footlocker National XC Champions) has already posted a time faster than the meet record. Mel will be challenged a strong group of Alyssa Abbott (Galena), Kara Tolzman (Fallon) and Daryan Glenn (Reno). In the 1600 and 3200 meet and stadium record holder Collier Lawrence (Reno; and 19th in the Footlocker Nationals in cross country) returns. Owner of a 1600 PR of 4:57 she’ll be pushed by her sister Mel, Britney Almaguer (Mt Sac champion, and leads the state 5:08) along with Kara Tolzman (Fallon). All should challenge the meet record in the 3200. Hurdles: In the 300 hurdles Polly Smith (North Valleys), Lacey Munson (North Valleys) will push defending state champion, Megan Olivetti (Wooster), with a possible new meet and stadium record. In field events: both Amanda Christenhusz (North Valleys) at 5’5” in
the High jump and Jennifer Onyeagbako (Reed) with 135’ discus throw
should challenge meet records being pushed by strong fields.
