RIO MESA SPARTAN RELAYS RESULTS 4/3/2004

The 18th annual Spartan Relays took place on April 3rd under pleasant weather conditions at Rio Mesa HS in Oxnard. Thirty teams took part in the meet. All events at the meet were run as relays, even the field events, where the best marks of each of three athletes from a school were added together for a total distance or height. Although the meet stresse the “team” aspect of track & field, there were a host of noteworthy performances. Rio Mesa sophomore Lauren Reid (state 1600 champ Phillip’s sister) soared 19’4.5” into a slight headwind in the girls LJ. Ventura junior Colin Campell ran his first high school 800 ever in 1:58, and then came back to run a 48 and change split on his team’s 4x400. St. Bonaventure junior Carlton Gillespie had a fine double, heaving the Shot 53’ even and the Discus 161’7”. The Boys varsity team competition was hotly contested, with Rio Mesa pulling off a victory over a talented small school squad from St. Bonaventure. Rio Mesa was also the easy winner in the Girls Varsity division, and the Spartans placed first in the Girls’ F/S divisions as well. All in all in was a fun day, with over 1,100 medals awarded to the participants. Results for the Varsity Division were as follows:
