DAY 2 – AUG. 6, 2003
US Pan Am Games Track and Field Preview

6 a.m.: Women’s 20k Walk Final
U.S. Entries: Joanne Dow, Bedford, N.H.; Amber Antonia, Cudahy, Wis.
Joanne Dow finished fifth in the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg with a time of 1:36:33. She recorded her season-best time for 2003 in a second place finish at the USA Outdoor Championships (1:34:57).
Amber Antonia is making her first Pan Am Games appearance. She was fourth at the USA Outdoor Championships with a season-best time of 1:39:55. Her personal-best time of 1:35:59 was set at the 2002 USA Outdoor Championships.
This is only the second time this event has been run in the Pan American Games.

9 a.m.: Decathlon (Second-Day events: 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1,500)
U.S. Entries: Stephen Moore, Plainview, Texas
The United States has won the gold medal at the last two Pan American Games and in 10 Pan American Games overall.
First-day leader Stephen Moore (4,196 points), who finished fourth in the 2003 U.S. Championships, won the first two events of the day – the 100 and long jump – and then climaxed the evening by winning the 400 in 48.16 seconds

6:10 p.m. Women’s 800 Final
U.S. Entries: Hazel Clark, Gainesville, Fla.
The United States hopes to make it five straight Pan American Games in which it has earned at least one medal. Meredith Rainey earned a gold medal in 1995 and copped a bronze medal in 1999.
Hazel Clark, who was seventh in the 2000 Olympics, ran a season best of 2:01.71 at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships where she finished sixth.

6:30 p.m. : Men’s 800 Final
U.S. Entries: Jess Strutzel, Huntington Beach, Calif (Huntington Beach HS).; Floyd Thompson, Santa Monica, Calif.
The United States has won nine gold medals in the 800 with Johnny Gray setting a meet record of 1:45.38 in the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Floyd Thompson set a personal best of 1:46.78 en route to a fourth-place finish at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships. He was ranked seventh in the U.S. as a senior at Baylor in 2001.
Jess Strutzel was fifth at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships. He ran a season best of 1:46.94 at the Oxy Invitational May 10 in Eagle Rock, Calif. He was third in the 800 at the 2001 USA Outdoor Championships and 2002 USA Indoor Championships. Strutzel, who was ranked fifth in the U.S. in 2001, owns a personal best of 1:45.81 set in 1999.

6:40 p.m.: Men’s Long Jump Final
U.S. Entries: Melvin Lister, Fayettville, Ark.; Kevin Dilworth, Grand Prairie, Texas
The United States was shut out in the medal hunt at the last two Pan American Games. Llewellyn Starks was the last American to earn a medal, finishing second in the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. Former Arkansas Razorback Melvin Lister enters the competition with a season-best jump of 25-8 en route to finishing fourth at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships.
Lister, who competed in the 2000 Olympics, also was fifth at the 2001 World Indoor Championships. He owns a personal best of 27-10 1/4 to win the 2000 Southeastern Conference Championships.
Kevin Dilworth, who was fifth (25- 4 ¾) at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships, is coming off a season best 26-6 ½ at Gateshead, England, July 13. He was fourth at the 2001 Goodwill Games and sixth at the 2001 World Indoor Championships.

6:45 p.m.: Women’s 100 Final
U.S. Entries: Angela Williams, Ontario, Calif (Chino HS).; Lauryn Williams, Miami, Fla.
The United States has won nine gold medals, including seven straight from 1955 to 1979. Chryste Gaines was the last American to win the gold at Mar Del Plata, Argentina in 1995.
Angela Williams, a four-time NCAA 100 champion (1999-2002) at Southern Cal, earned two silver medals in the 1999 Pan American Games after finishing second in the 100 and running a leg on the 4x100 relay, which was second. Angela Williams, who was ranked fifth in the U.S. last year, was sixth in the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships.
She won her first national title by winning the 60 at the 2003 USA Indoor Championships and was second in the 2001 and 2003 World Indoor Championships. She ran a season best of 11.23 in the semifinals of the USA Outdoor Championships.
Lauryn Williams, who completed her sophomore year at Miami of Florida, won the 100 at the 2002 World Junior Championships and was ranked ninth in the U.S. last year. She was second in the 100 at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships and seventh in the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships. She ran a season best of 11.20 at the NCAA East Regional.

7 p.m.: Men’s 100 Final
U.S. Entries: Mickey Grimes, Ontario, Calif (Canyon Springs HS, Moreno Valley). , Marcelle Scales (Franklin, Tenn.)
The United States has won four gold medals in the men’s 100 including a victory by Bernard Williams in 1999.
Mickey Grimes ran the fastest qualifying time in the preliminary round Tuesday in a personal best of 10.08. He came back to run in the semifinal round.is coming off a personal best of 10.11 at the MidSummer Classic in Walnut, Calif., July 12. He ran the second leg on the gold medal winning 4x100 relay at the 2001 World Outdoor Championships.
Marcelle Scales won the 100 at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships in a personal best of 10.25 and he was seventh at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships.

7:10 p.m.: Men’s Javelin Final
U.S. Entries: Breaux Greer, Athens, Ga.; Robert Minnitti, Port Orchard, Wash.
No stranger to international competition, four-time reigning USA Outdoor champion Breaux Greer is making his first trip to the Pan Am Games. Greer was 12th in the 2000 Olympics and fourth in the 2001 World Outdoor Championships. He threw a season best 260-4 at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships and he owns a personal best of 285-5 at the 2001 World Outdoor Championships.
Rob Minnitti, who concluded his collegiate career at Boise State this spring, was second in the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships and NCAA Outdoor Championships. He set a personal best of 253-9 July 6 in Pihtipudas, Finland.

7:20 p.m.: Women’s 400 Hurdles Final
U.S. Entries: Brenda Taylor, Chula Vista, Calif.; Joanna Hayes, Los Angeles, Calif. (North HS, Riverside)
The United States has won the gold medal third of a possible five times. The last gold medal by an American occurred in 1995 when Kim Batten was clocked in 54.74.
Joanna Hayes (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Brenda Taylor (Chula Vista, Calif.) each won their heats in the semifinal round of the women’s 400 hurdles. Hayes, who finished fifth in the 1999 Pan American Games, posted the fastest qualifying time of 55.64 while running in the first heat. Taylor, the 2001 NCAA 400 hurdle champion from Harvard, won heat two in 55.76.
Hayes finished second (54.76) at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships and ran a season best of 54.66 in Paris, France, July 4.
Taylor, who was ranked seventh in the U.S. in 2002, ran a personal best of 55.23 in Fort-de-France April 26. The 2001 NCAA 400 hurdle champion from Harvard was fourth (55.60) in the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships.

7:35 p.m. : Men’s 400 Hurdles Final
U.S. Entries: Regan Nichols, Houston, Texas; Eric Thomas, Houston, Texas
The United States hopes to end a dry spell in the gold medal hunt that dates back to 1983. James Walker was the last American to win the 400 hurdles at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
2000 Olympian Eric Thomas, who was ranked seventh in the world in 2002, won the 400 hurdles at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships in 48.76. He finished second in the 400 hurdles at the 1999 Pan American Games. Ironically, Thomas’ season best occurred in his first outdoor meet at Meeting du Conseil General de la Martinique - Fort-de-France where he won in 48.61.
Regan Nichols finished second in the first semifinal heat Tuesday in 50.01. He was sixth in the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships in a season best time of 49.70

8:10 p.m. : Women’s 5,000 Final
U.S. Entries: Nicole Jefferson, Gunnison, Colo (San Luis Obispo HS).; Ann Marie Brooks, Columbia, Mo.
This will mark only the third time the 5,000 has been held in the Pan American Games with the lone medal won by the U.S. occurring in 1999 when Blake Phillips was third.
Nicole Jefferson was sixth in a season best 15:35.97 in the 5,000 at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships.
Ann Marie Brooks was eighth (15:42.47) in the 5,000 at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships. She ran a personal best of 15:40.68 at the 2003 Mt. SAC Relays.
