Pan American Junior Championships - Day 3 - July 20, 2003 - Jim Spier

Memorial Stadium, Waterford, Barbados

Women

200m
Shalonda Solomon (USA-Long Beach, CA) was to face the challenge of career, running against World Youth champ Anneisha Mc Laughlin (Jamaica). Solomon had the fastest qualifier (23.21, 0.4) in the trials, with Mc Laughlin winning her heat in 23.45 (-0.6). It was Mc Laughlin off to a great start and a big lead through the turn. Mike Byrnes stated, “ .. here she comes .. “, referring to the charge of Solomon down the home stretch. It was a magnificent sight as Solomon virtually “ran down” the field winning in a pb 22.93 (0.0). Mc Laughlin was second (23.34) and Shana Cox (USA-Holy Trinity, Hicksville, NY 23.39) finished third.

1500m
It was the Americans (Chantelle Dron and Elizabeth Maloy) against yesterday’s 800m champ Yuneisi Santiuti Caball from Cuba. Dron (home-schooled from Manchester, NH), Maloy (Holy Names, Albany, NY) and Santitui Caball battled for 3 laps, with Dron the leader at 400m (73.6), 800m (2:26.1) and 1200m (3:35.7). At the bell, it was the Cuban who took the lead, using her 800m speed to dominate the last lap, covering it in about 66 seconds and winning in 4:24.56. Dron (4:26.66) and Maloy (4:26.87) took the silver and bronze, running especially well considering the long indoor and outdoor seasons of 2003.

5000m
A three person race comprised of Suzanna Larsen and Amber Sayer (Amherst HS, MA) of the US, and Ines Malchor of Peru. It was basically a two person race between Larsen and Malchor for all but the last lap, at which time Malchor outsprinted Larsen to win by 16 seconds.

400m Hurdles
Tawana Watkins (USA-South Carolina) had the early lead and she and Camille Robinson (Jamaica) battled for 7 hurdles. At that point, Brazilian Amanda Dias in lane 2 put on a burst to take the lead that she never relinquished, winning in 58.09. Robinson faded and Josanne Lucas (Trinidad) sprinted to the finish to gain the second place finish. Mackenzie Hill (USA-Wilson, Long Beach, CA - 58.61) got the bronze medal as she continued to pick up International experience (she was just at the World Youth Games in Canada)!!

4x100m
Solid passes for the US got them the win. It was Ashley Owens (Liberty, Colorado Springs, CO) to Juanita Broaddus (William Penn, Philadelphia, PA) to Alandra Sherman (Eisenhower, Houston, TX) to Shalonda Solomon (Poly, Long Beach, CA). Solomon held off a charge from Jamaica (just like in the Penn Relays). (She is getting the reputation of an insurance policy - just get her the baton and she’ll almost guarantee the win). The US ran 44.00, off the 43.38 the meet (and world junior) record set by the US team in Tampa in 1999.

4x400m
Deonna Lawrence (Sheldon, Sacramento, CA 53.4 - was told by reader that this was Jasmine Lee lead-off - check official results far below in this event), Angel Perkins (Arizona 54.2), Natasha Hastings (AP Randolph, New York, NY 52.3) and Stephanie Smith (Northeast, Macon, GA) let a 3 team field “wire to wire”, winning in 3:34.08. Both Lawrence and Hastings return as high school seniors next year. Jamaica was well back in 3:41.26 and Canada third (3:43.54).

Pole Vault

7. Althea Duncan Jamaica 40-2.25 0.8
8. Mary Egbo-Egbo Canada 40-1.5 -0.5

A totally dominant performance by the Cuban Ferandez Luis, who yesterday won the long jump (21-2.5). Williams jumped her best on her third jump, with home town favorite Desiree Crichlow jumping 42-2.25 on her final attempt, just ½ inch behind Williams.

Javelin

Heptathlon
1. Juana Catillo Dominican Republic 5381
2. Nadina Marsh Jamaica 5135
3. Janine Polischuk Canada 5101
4. Shannon Meyer USA (San Diego State) 5088
5. Daniela Ayers-Stampers USA (Seattle Pacific) 4967
6. Francisca Garcia Mexico 4618
7. Kytzzia Vasquez Mexico 4461
8. Gabriela Carrillo El Salvador 4420

Catillo had bests in 3 events and Marsh in 4. But Catillo was dominant in the weights (41-7 shot put, 143-6 javelin) and, surprisingly, the 800 (2:16.07). Marsh hurdled 14.13, high jumped 5-7 and ran 25.30 in the 200m (as did American Shannon Meyer). Felix Sanchez, the Dominican long hurdler, must be having an influence on his country’s athletics. An athlete like Catillo has been the exception rather than the rule in the history of Dominican track and field. And that, certainly, is a good thing.

Men

200m
My, my, my! Usain Bolt, last year’s World Junior Champion, put on a show. Leading from the start, he crossed the line in a meet record 20.13! More importantly, it tied the World Junior Record of Roy Martin (USA) set in 1985. (The results board initially flashed 19.94 and, of course, the crowd responded accordingly; Mike Kennedy, after seeing him run in Sherbrooke last week, predicted that he may run under 20 seconds this year. It almost came true). David Neville of the US was well back in 20.63 for second.

1500m
It was bunched for the first 400 meters (63.6), when the Canadian Kurt Benninger decided to take off. There was a pack of four for most of the rest of the race of Benninger, his teammate Mike Woods, Cuban Maure Castillo Gera and Tyler Raymond of the US. Benninger kept the lead over the next 2 laps (2:03.6 - 60.0, and 3:03.3 - 59.7) when the Cuban took off extending his lead convincingly. His last 400 was under 60 seconds, even as he slowed dowm in the homestretch, waving and blowing kisses to the crowd!

400m Hurdles
The word was that the Penn Relays champ, Javier Colson of Puerto Rico would give Kenneth Ferguson a good run. And he did, for 7 hurdles. Ferguson put on a burst at that point and Colson did not respond, fading to second as Isa Phillips of Jamaica passed him over the last hurdle. Ferguson became a double gold medal winner, having won the 110m hurdles previously. Ferguson clocked 50.07, with Phillips second at 50.95, and Colson third (51.10). Matthew Willis (UCLA) did not have a good race, finishing seventh in 54.97.

3000m Steeplechase
A pack of three developed early with Christian Patino (Ecuador), Kevin Davis (USA - California) and Jean Calzadilla (Venezuela). Davis was third at the bell, with Patino in the lead. Calzadilla passed Davis in the backstretch and extended his lead over him. Neither had a shot at Patino. Davis sprinted down the homestretch and caught Calzadilla as the Venezuelan was stopping his watch at the finish. Patino was the winner at 9:05.70, with Davis second (9:06.20), .05 ahead of Calzadilla.

4x100m
A great leadoff led by Carlos Moore (Mt. San Antonio College) and an equally great pass between he and Aaron Collins (Texas) gave the US a significant lead. Aaron handed off to twin Ashton (Texas) in a less than perfect pass. Aaron safely passed to Willie Hordge (Forest Brook, Houston, TX), who held off 200 meter champ Usain Bolt of Jamaica. The US ran a fine 39.29, with Jamaica second in 39.40.

4x400m
They were going for the World Junior record (3:01.90) but settled for the meet record, running 3:02.88, besting the 1991 3:03.53 best. There was no real competition for the US squad, comprised of Elzie Coleman (Newburgh, NY 46.0), Jeremy Wariner (Baylor 45.3), Kenneth Ferguson (South Carolina 46.1) and Ashton Collins (Texas 45.5). That made 3 golds each for Ferguson and Collins. Had there been some competition for the US team, they might have gotten the record. As it was, Wariner, Ferguson Collins ran solo, inhibiting somewhat their individual times. Canada held off Jamaica for second, running 3:11.56 to Jamaica’s 3:12.41.

Triple Jump
1. David Girart Rivero Cuba 55-6.5 -0.5
55-6.5, 54-4.75, 54-4, 53-10.25, 54-1.75, F
2. Ayata Joseph Antigua 53-5.5 0.1
3. Leonardo Dos Santos Brazil 51-4.5 0.1
4. Wilfred Martinez Caraba Cuba 50-10 0.1
5. Solomon Welch USA (Stanford) 49-7 -0.3
6. Wilbert Walker Jamaica 48-10 0.4
7. Carlos Mattis Jamaica 48-7.25 -0.3
8. Travis Joseph St. Lucia 48-2.5 0.2

Girart Rivero, the silver medallist in the long jump, won this event in a meet record 55-6.5, breaking his countrymen’s 1991 jump of 55-2 set in 1991. He got his big jump on his first attempt, and noone could catch him.

USATF Release on the meet

Solomon breaks Pan American Junior Record
7-20-2003

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Shalonda Solomon broke the Pan American Junior Championships record in the women’s 200m at the Barbados National Stadium in Waterford, St. Michael. The event was broadcast live locally for the third consecutive day on the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation’s Channel 8.

The Long Beach Poly High School (Calif.) senior ran 23.21 in the preliminary round bettering Jamaica’s Liliana Allen’s previous record of 23.29 set in 1989. The 17-year-old, Solomon later improved her record to 22.93 in the final round to win gold in the 200m. Teammate Shana Cox of Westbury, N.Y., won bronze in 23.39. “This is my last meet of the season and I am happy to go out with a bang,” said Solomon. The 2003 Pan Am Junior 100m champion did not have any doubts to continue her winning streak. “She (McLaughlin-Jamaica) was ahead of me on the curve, so I had to put everything using my arms and legs to make my way past on the straightaway.” Solomon ran the anchor leg in winning her third gold in the women’s 4X100m relay in 44.00. “This has been a great experience to compete against international talent,” Solomon continued.

Team USA topped the medal stand with 48 total medals Sunday night with Cuba in second with 15 medals. The men tallied 23 medals including 10 gold, nine silver and four bronze while the women had 25 medals including 10 gold, nine silver and six bronze.

Kenneth Ferguson continued his winning streak after striking gold in the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.07 seconds. “In the beginning I was nervous because I wanted to run hard, but didn’t want to risk injury,” said Ferguson. “I always stutter step on the backstretch, but I was able to get my steps together around the curve.” The Detroit, Mich., native ran the third leg on the 4X400m relay team that set a Pan American Junior Championships record of 3:02.88 bettering the 3:03.53 set by Team USA in 1991. “I am just happy to bring home another gold,” Ferguson continued.

The men’s 4X100m relay team also set a Pan American Junior Championships record to win gold in 39.29 bettering Team USA’s 39.42 set in 1982. Carlos Moore of Lynwood, Calif., in his first time running the lead leg had no doubts about chasing the record. “I knew coming in that I was the best starter out there,” said Moore. “I focused on getting out fast since we were in the outside line from the other teams.”

Indiana University’s David Neville won silver in the men’s 200m race that had a World Junior record tied by Usain Bolt of Jamaica. The sophomore-to-be from Merriville, Ind., ran 20.63. “I am so excited this is my first time under 21 (seconds),” said Neville. “I tried to catch up him (Bolt) but couldn’t after he set that record (World Junior record 20.13).

Angela Marvin of Kingwood, Texas won gold in the women’s 2000m steeplechase in 6:37.84. “It was a good strong race and I am really happy after working with adverse conditions,” said Marvin. I got a PR falling down twice in the pit on the first and last barrier. I am just privileged to be here,” Marvin continued. Indiana University’s Kelly Siefker won silver in 6:40.87 to complete another dynamic duo performance. “This was a pretty laid back race for me,” said Siefker. “I focused on trying to accelerate into the barriers while keeping up with Angela (Marvin).”

Chantelle Dron of New Hampshire won silver in the women’s 1500m in 4:26.66. “I started a bit slow, some days I am a little off and today was one of them,” said Dron. Elizabeth Maloy of Loudonville, N.Y., won bronze in 4:26.87. “I am happy with my finish since I have not run in a few months and also excited to be here competing,” said Maloy.

BYU-bound Julene Bailey cleared 4.05m/13-3.50 to win gold in the women’s pole vault while the University of California-bound teammate Kira Kosta cleared 4.00m/13-1.50 to win bronze. The 18-year-old Bailey had one of the best overall performances in her career. “This is one of the most amazing feelings,” said Bailey. “I was not going to let this (championship) slip away which is why I knew I had to clear each height on my first attempt to win.

Beth Mallory added a silver medal in the women’s hammer throw to her silver in the discus throw from Friday evening. The University of Alabama sophomore-to-be in her first year competing in the event threw 57.75m/189-5. “This was a great way to end my season. It was exciting to get a PR,” said Mallory.

George Mason University’s Alyce Williams leaped 12.87m/42-2.75 to win silver in the women’s triple jump. “I need to work on my second phase and my entrance into the pit needs to improve. I am excited that I contributed to USA 48 medals. I am happy.
