Jenna Timinsky outside leaders at the 400 mark

Jenna Timinsky (UCLA/San Dieguito Academy) would battle a top group from lane 6. 28.7 Ashley Patten leader. Timinsky moved up to third by the 400 and was in that position down the backstretch. Jenna was second, but boxed with 200 to go and had to stop and go outside which cost her. Big 12 runner-up Patten from Univ Missouri led into the homestretch, with Jenna ending third at 2:09.64. Patten 2:07.60, Nicole (Kansas prep) 2:08.13 and Timinsky 3rd.

Mens' 800

Michael Hadden approaches the 400 mark

Tetlo Emmen (UCSB via West Torrance HS) (lane 2) and Michael Haddan (Irvine Cougars/Woodbridge HS) (lane 7). Haddan led and looked good in qualifying at 1:51.53. 25.0 opening 200 - they were smoking with Haddan fourth - 52.93 at the 400 with Haddan fourth - Haddan was 1:21.0 in 5th with Emmen fourth at that point - Inge of Kent State and the front pack pulled away to win at super 1:47.90 - Emmen 5th at 1:50.60 with Hadan 7th 1:51.57 -wow!!! (6 under 1:51.0)

Girls 100 Finals

Shalonda races away in the 100

It was a Shalonda Solomon show in the sprints this day, with the LB Poly flash rocketing away from the field to a fine 11.40 (wind +0.7), with Carol Rodriguez 3rd at 11.68.

Men's 100 Finals

Moore and O'Neal battle to right

Great race, with Carlos Moore (Mt. SAC via Morningside HS) the narrow winner at 10.38 (wind 0) over Kenny O'Neal (Skyline HS) at 10.40!!! Garry Jones (USC via Skyline HS) was 5th at 10.60. Great race with Moore's excitement afterwards fun to watch--the guy was happy to win!!!

Women's 400 Meter Hurdles

Hill in the Blue second from left starts her move near the end of the race!!

Happy Mackenzie!!! - among top 15 ever at HS Level!!!

Dianna Gooden (West Valley/LB Wilson) was in lane 4 with Mackenzie Hill (West Valley/LB wilson) lane 7 and Eryn Mack (Santa Monica HS) in lane 8. Tawana Watkins (South Carolina) came down the homestretch to what looked like a comfortable win, but Mackenzie Hill came from a ways back to challenge right at the tape and run 58.39 (#18 All-Time US HSer - Wow!!!) for second behind the 58.38 winner. Super effort!!

Men's 400 Hurdles

Kenneth Ferguson (South Carolina), a sub 49 hurdler, led the field in lane 7, with UCLA's Matthew Willis (via Servite HS) in Lane 2. Willis ran a super race, Ferguson the winner 50.70. Illinois' Adrian Walker 51.73, with Matt 51.89 in third to just miss the U.S. Pan Am team.

Women's 3000m

Scheduled were Tia Ferguson (San Marcos HS, SB), Clara Horowitz (Duke/Holy Names HS), and Phyllis Blanchard (Rancho Cotate HS). Twenty-one started the event, with some really good folks along!! Horowitz was a scratch. The first 400 went by in 73.6 with Nevadan Collier Lawrence who seems to run most of her meets in California anyway, along with Notre Dame Collegian, who ran in the 15:30's this spring for the distance, leaders. Huddle raced away during a 38 second third 200 to lead by 20 meters at the 600 mark. 2:28.9 was the time at 800, with Huddle already 60m ahead. Lawrence had 10m on the third pack, with Blanchard leading that crew. Huddle was 4:56.8 to lead by a lot! She was 6:12.8 at the 2000m five lap point. AT 8:07.60 with one to go the Meet Record of 9:21 from 1981 was in reach! Huddle looked strong and finished in 9:19.52. Back with the second pack Tia Ferguson (San Marcos, SB) was a fine 9:53.70 in 6th, easily her best race of the season to finish it off!!

Men's 5000 Meters

A bunch of Golden Staters we noticed, led by Gerardo Rabelo, Brett Gotcher (10,000 winner last night), Dan Lyon, Abadir Barre, Tim Nelson, and Billy Nelson, with Billy 13:58 in the NCAA's for Colorado for the full 5000, with Tim Nelson the California 3200 Champ. Gotcher and Nelson led early. Gotcher led early with Nelson taking over at 2:26.9 for the 800. 3:39.2 at the 1200. 4:49.90 at 1600m. 5:59.9 then a 67.9 as a half a dozen broke away, Tim Nelson working his way up to that group. 8:17.7 for 7 laps, 70.0 for that lap. Nelson was 9:27.1 at 3200, Tim Nelson 9:30.1. Billy led a group of 3 at 11:44.7 at 9 laps (Galen Rupp and Stanford's Peter Meindl). Rupp took the lead with 700 meters left. At 12:50.40 (65.8 that circuit) it was Rupp and Billy Nelson pulling away. Nelson took over the just over a lap to go, with 13:23.3 at that point. Rupp is an Oregon high-schooler and racing to a good time. Tim Nelson was 13:41 with 1 to go. Billy Nelson finished at 14:21.46 (very quick last 400), with Tim Nelson 14:45.07 in 5th an excellent prep time. Oregon prep Rupp was second at 14:28.00.
