Sunday Junior Field Events

Women’s Jr Discus
Ohio Stat’s Amarachi Ukabam was the winner here, dominating the competition with all six of her throws (184-05 best) beyond second placer Beth Mallory of Alabama’s 166-11. Kate Hutchinson (San Clemente HS bound for USC) was a fine third at 166-04, narrowly missing the US Pan Am Jr team. Billie Joe Grant (Unat/Arroyo Grande HS bound for Univ Arizona) was 6th at 162-04, with former Bishop O’Dowd star Allyson Criner (now at North Carolina throwing for former Capistrano Valley and UCLA star Brian Blutreich) was 8th at 156-04.

Men’s Junior Triple Jump
Former St. Mary’s of Berkeley star, now a frosh at Stanford University, Solomon Welch, came through on his fifth jump with a nearly foot and a half improvement on his efforts that far to take the win at 50-02.5 (-2.4 mps wind). Former Serra HS of Gardena athlete, Ronald Carter, now at Long Beach State, was a fine 6th at 48-07.5w (+2.2 mps in the swirling conditions), with Angelo Jeffery (3M TC/James Logan HS) 8th at 47-07.25 (-2.0 mps) for 8th.

Men’s Jr Shot Put
The athletes here threw a ball between the prep and senior weight for this “Junior” competition, with the International governing body for some reason making a change recently in the implement. So, the iron ball used is between the 12 and 16 pound ball used in the event, preps will naturally come down in distance a tad from where they threw during the regular season, with collegians obviously dropping down from the 16 pound implement, moving up a bit. I guess they use the implement a great deal in the rest of the world at this junior level, but it is a one or two meet season in the career of our young throwers.
Florida’s Garrett Johnson, a 65 foot prep last year, and a 61-11 thrower this year to set a school record at Florida State University, dominated the competition with a 63-08.75 effort. USC’s Noah Bryant (via Carpinteria HS) was next at a fine 61-10.5, with William Denbo (USC via Nashville, Tennessee) was third at 61-10.25. El Camino CC’s Harold Young (via Oklahoma) Harold Young was 6th at 60-01.75, with Brian Ruziecki (Unat/Huntington Beach) 7th at 59-06.25, and Leighton Heape (Cal Poly SLO via Palm Springs HS) 8th at 59-03. Arroyo Grande’s Mark Lewis was the first prep at 9th in 57-06.5. This may have been Mark’s best effort of the year with an implement we can kind of only guess at the distance differential at between this and the 12 pound ball mark normally throws.

Women’s Jr Triple Jump
Large and talented field featured a number of Golden Staters. George Mason’s Alyce Williams, 7th in the Eastern Regional this spring and with an indoor best of over 43 feet, was 42-07.5 (-2.9 mps wind) on her third effort to win the competition, with Texans, prep record holder Ychlindra Spears (Univ Texas) 42-04 (-2.5) and super prep Erica McLain 42-02 (-2.3) just nipping Brittany Daniels (Tracy Flyers/Merrill West HS) 42-01.5 (+0.8) for the other medals. Michelle Sanford (Irvine Cougars/Woodbridge HS) was 6th at 40-06w (+2.6), with Gayle Hunter (West Valley TC/North HS of Riverside) 8th at 39-11.25 (-0.7). The wind, which appeared to vary 5-6 meters per second in a swirling manner, must have been a challenge step-wise for the athletes, as that is 10-15 miles per hour one way or the other.
