Women's High Jump

California sweep, with Chaunte Howard (Ga Tech/North HS, Riverside) a brief day of four clearances at 1.72-1.75 (5-08.75)-1.78 (5-10) -1.81 (5-11.25) that had her the winner. Sharon Day (Costa Mesa) was 5-10 for second with two trials to get over that height. Kaylene Wagner (Cal Poly/SLO - Dos Pueblos HS) tied with Ashley Robbins (Unat/Texas prep) at 5-08.75, with Wagner winning a jump-off for the alternate spot to the Pan Am Jr's (they take two per event) July in Barbados.

Men's High Jump

Arcadia Invite winner, Michael Morrison (Willingboro, NJ) was over 7-01.5 along with Keith Moffatt (last year grad of Va HS to Univ of Arkansas), with Moffatt the winner on misses. Kent Centers was 4th at 6-08.25 for 4th with Denior Flax (Mt. SAC) 6-08.25 to tie for 5th.

Men's Discus

This event throws an "International Junior Implement" that is half-way between the HS weight and Open weight discus. Harold Young (El Camino JC via Oklahoma HS) led the second flight at 187-08, with Dustin Lawrenson (Fresno State/Sacramento area HS grad) 175-03 for 4th in that grouping. Winner Adam Kuehl (Univ Arizona) was 190-10 to win off his very first throw, with Young ending second overall when he could not improve in the finals. Jason Dixon (Wasington) ended third at 180-04, so Young and Lawrenson should be off to the Pan Am Jr Meet.

Women’s 100m Hurdles
(H-1) Alandra Sherman (Tx), a 13.25 hurdler, was out quickly and dominated the heat with a 13.91 win (wind -2.8 mps), with Ashley Lodree (El Cerrito) ending second at 14.08 and Ashlee Brown (North, Riv) third at 14.25. Former Cleveland Reseda star, Brynne Steward, now attending college in Washington was 5th at 14.61.
(H-2) UCLA’s Dawn Harper, by way of Illinois took the race at 13.72 (-3.1 mps), with Talia Stewart (Logan, Union City) 14.22 in 4th. Sacramento State's Roshena Duree was 14.99 in 6th.

Men's 110mHH

(H-1) Thomas Mack (Bakersfield HS bound for UC Berkeley) finished about 5th in this 42" barrier event. Dexter Faulk the winner 14.17 (-1.8), with Mack 14.94.

(H-2) Kevin Craddock (Logan, Union City) did a fine job, racing 14.54 (wind -1.7) to finish second to Michael Mitchum (Oregon) 14.18. .

(H-3) Kenneth Ferguson (So Carolina) looked very strong in winning at 14.23 (-3.0 mps), with Florida's Mike Lloyd next at 14.62. Former Wood HS of Vacaville star Jarrett Bush was 5th at 15.20.

Women's 200m

Heat 1 Girls 200

(H-1) Shalonda Solomon (LB Poly) and Angel Perkins (Gahr HS now at Univ Arizona) were out in lanes 6 and 3 respectively. On the inside Philadelphia's Juanita Broaddus moved well out of Lane 1. Down the stretch Solomon edged away to a 23.68 win (-1.4), with Perkins next at 24.07 and Broaddus 24.16 in third.

(H-2) Three person race after scratches. Elizabeth Olear (Louisville, WH) came off the turn well, with Natasha Hastings (Randolph, NYC), a former Arcadia Invite 400 champ, on the inside moving well to the win at 24.36 (-1.6 mps). Olear eased off at the finish and ended up third at 24.55

(H-3) New York's Shana Cox small advantage off the turn in this race, and she ended up ahead of George's Stephanie Smith 24.17-24.22 (-3.2 mps wind).

Men's 200 Meters

(H-1) - Texas prep Earvin Park led off the turn, with David Neville (former Indiana prep first year collegian) moving strongly near the end to take a narrow 21.39-21.41 win with the wind -1.3.

(H-2) Xavier Carter (Florida prep) was a scratch in lane 3, with added starter Carlos Moore (Mt. Sac) the person here who won at 21.40. State HS Champ Lionel Larry (Dominguez) ended third at 21.94, with Ronnie Drummer 2223 in 5th.

Heat 2 Men's 200

(H-3) University of Texas frosh Aaron Collins was the winner at 21.26, with Nick Cunningham (Monterey HS) back at 22.12.

1500 Meters Women

(H-1) Dani Schuster (Torrey Pines), Bridget Duffy (UC Berkeley), and State 1600 Champ Alicia Follmar (Saratoga) raced here - Duffy sat on the outside in third at the 400 in 71.5. A very tight pack with two to go at 2:08, with Follmar falling right after that 700 meter point- she fell back with the 800 going by for the leaders at 2:26.3 - New Yorker Elizabeth Malloy moved at the 800 point and stretched it out. One to go at 3:18. Appeared Schuster affected also by the fall, as she was far back. 3:36.4 at the 1200, Malloy a big lead with Duffy second at that point. Follmar showed great heart as she edged to the back of the regular pack but 50m back of the leader with 200 to go. Northeasterners Maloy and Chantelle Dron went 1-2 under 4:30, with Bridget Duffy 3rd at 4:31.83. Follmar was very tough, finishing 8th in 4:39.13 after the fall--showed us a lot of character.

(H-2) Kristina Smith (Alaska prep) 70.1 at the 400 with 4:37 prep miler from Massachusetts, Ari Lambie, next. 2:08.4 at two to go, with Shannon Bergstedt (Minnesota prep) taking the lead and leading through 2:27.4 at the 800. Lambie was still running a controlled second, on the track where she will be the next four years at Stanford. Julia Lucas took the lead with one to go at 3:21.7, and continued to lead at 1200 in 3:38.4. Lambie glided along with 200 to go in third, easing up on the straightaway, and putting out enough to finish in the top 3 as Kristina Smith raced up to the pack of 3. The top 3 moved on automatically.

Men's 1500m

(H-1) Stanford by way of University HS of San Francisco Sean Drake raced here with a good group. Sean and teammate Rolf Steir led through 300 at 47 seconds. The 400 went by at 64.2. The group of nine was obviously still very close. At the 600 the entire group was within about 6 meters! Two to go went by at 1:56, places unchanged. Things moved with one to go and the 1200 went by at 3:14.6, with Chrisopher Lukezic, last year's champ (Georgetown frosh this year) here closing strong to win 3:57.90 just ahead of a tight pack.

Phillip Reid - 1500m Heat

(H-2) State 1600 Champ Phillip Reid (Rio Mesa) raced here with another fine group. Phillips sat in second behind leader Brian Sullivan (Texas prep) at 63.5 for the 400. The pack sat back about 5 meters behind Sullivan through 600 meters. 1:55 with two to go, with a 2:12.3 at the 800. Reid sat in the middle of the pack, boxed at big at 5th place. Reid was in second with 1 to go and put up a good sprint and was second at 3:15.4 at the 1200. Phillip was very strong down the straightaway to win 3:58.64, with the first 3 within a half second.

Women's 400 meter Heats

(H-1) Myra Hasson (Gardena) a scratch. Georgian Stephanie Smith lead from early on, with Christina Hardeman (DeAnza College) pressing close down the stretch 54.23-54.63.

(H-2) State Champ Jasmine Lee (LB Poly) was in lane 6 against a good field. Natasha Hastings (Randolph, NYC) ran just ahead of Lee most of the event to win in the mid-54's.

Angel Perkins -

(H-3) Angel Perkins (Gahr HS to Univ Arizona) in lane 5, with Brittani Dudley (Logan, UC) Lane 6, and Deonna Lawrence (Alex Van Dyke TC/Sheldon HS) in lane 8. Angel was out hard and led most of the race, with Lawrence moving down the homestretch to come close 53.76-53.89

(H-4) Shana Cox (North Carolina prep) on the outside was ahead the entire way and won at 54.32, with Lauren Austin moving at the end to place second at 54.80.

Men's 400 Meters

(H-1) - Baylor 45.13 frosh star Jeremy Wariner was out of lane 3. He was out and sucked up a couple of staggers on the way to a 21.8 at the 200 mark. Not pressed he cruised in at 46.64 to win by over eight tenths of a second.

(H-2) - DeSean Cunningham (University City, SD) was in lane 6 here. Elzie Coleman (New York prep) was out quickly, with Texas collegiate frosh star Ashton Collins moving off the turn to win 46.47. Elzie Coleman ended second at 47.18, with Cunningham racing hard at 47.74 for third to make the finals.

Women's 800m

(H-1) Cherie McPherson was in this contest. 29.2 opening 800 with Ashley Patten (Univ Missouri) and 8th grader Devon Williams (Maryland) up front. Tight pack up through the 400 at 64.8. Patten moved a bit right at the 400, with a 1:38.4 at the 600. Devon Williams made a run at the lead with 200 to go, with a lot of movement up front down the stretch. McPherson fought to the tape and was 2:12.77 in 5th.

(H-2) Ashley Freeman (West Valley TC/LB Wilson) was here with former San Diego area standout Whitney Schmucker out in lane 7. Ashley led at 29.0 at the 200, and was 62.78 at the 400. At 1:35.4 at the 600 two had moved by Ashley, led by Missouri prep Shannon Leinert - Leinert was at 2:09.35, with Ashley 2:15.85, fading over the final half lap.

(H-3) Jamillah Titus (Sacramento area to SD State), Jenna Timinsky (San Dieguito HS to UCLA), with Alexis Bartschi (M. West, Tracy) a scratch. Laverna Morris out in 29.1 with Jenna and Jamillah 2-3 at the 400. Jenna challenged at the 400 in 61.6. 1:34.5 at the 600 as Timinsky pushed things. Pressing all the way home, Jenna won at 2:09.32.

Men's 800 Meters

(H-1) - Andrew Dawson (Alex Van Dyke TC/Vallejo HS) scratched. 25.5 opening 200m with Chris Woods (Georgia prep) the leader. 54.3 with Courtney Jaworski (Georgetown Univ) taking over and stretching it out. 1:23.0 at the 600, with 1:49 runner Michael Inge (Kent State) moving strongly winning 1:51.94 to Jaworski's 1:52.40.

(H-2) Michael Haddan (Irvine Cougars/Woodbridge HS), Bakersfield College star Nick Cramer (former Taft HS Central Section), and Tetlo Emmen (UCSB via West Torrance HS) ran here. 25.8 for Mark Korich leading at the 200, with Haddan second. At the 400, 54.86, Haddan was still in good position. 1:22.6 at the 600 as Haddan looked strong, powering in t a 1:51.54 win. Oregon prep McGrath looked good at 1:52.42. Emmen was 1:53.04 and Cramer 1:55.90.

Women's 200

Angel Perkins Lane 1, Elizabeth Olear Lane 2 - Shalonda Solomon Lane 6 - Shalonda cranked the turn to race away at 23.37 (wind -1.5 mps) from lane 6, with Shana Cox next at 23.67.

Men's 200m

Lionel Larry Lane 1 - Carlos Moore in Lane 7 - Moore was out very quick, with Collins (Univ Texas) closing well to win 21.06 (-1.8 mps) - Moore was 4th at 21.26 - Lionelkl Larry 6th at 21.59. .

Men's 400m Hurdles

(H-1) - Jenson Wayne (former Norte Dame Sherman Oaks/USC) was here, with Basil Campbell (New Jersey prep) the winner at 52.23. Jenson was 5th at 56.35.

(H-2) Matt Willis (Servite HS to UCLA) in lane 2. One lane outside of him was South Carolina frosh Kenneth Ferguson who had run 48.7! Kenneth romped away to a 51.38 win, with Willis 53.80 in 4th.

Women's 400m Hurdles

(H-1) - Shevell Quinley (Tracy Flyers/Merrill West HS) was in lane 5, with Eryn Mack (Santa Monica HS) in lane 7, and Dianna Gooden (West Valley/LB Wilson) in lane 9. Wisconsin's Melissa Talbot won at 60.52 with Gooden showing good spirit on the way to her 61.32 and Mack racing a good 62.83 for 5th.

(H-2) - Mackenzie Hill (West Valley TC/LB Wilson) was in lane 3, Tassia Cendejas (Mt. SAC/Ayala HS) was in 4, and Sophia Uwadiale (Acorn Oscar/St. Elizabeth HS) in lane 8. Hill really came to run, leading early and coming by the 300h mark at 44.3. South Carolina frosh Tawana Watkins came by to win at 59.92. Hill was next at 61.45, with Uwadile 4th at 62.86.

Women's 5000 Meters

Clara Horowitz (Duke/Head Royce HS) was entered but did not show. Claire Rethemeier (San Pasqual HS) tagged along at the trail end of the front pack. The leaders were 79.4 and 2:40.0. At the end of the third lap Claire started to fall back a tad from the lead group. Leaders were 5:19.2 at the 1600 with Rethmeier 5:25.4. Leaders 6:38.0 for five with Claire 6:48.3 (82.9 5:30 or so 1600 pace). Claire was 8:11.4 at six laps (83.1). 9:34.1 (82.7) for seven for Rethmeier and 10:16.5 at 3000 meters. Rethmeier was 10:58.7 for 3200m (84.6). 12:22.2 at 3600m (9 laps) (83.5). 13:45.7 at 10 laps (83.2) for Claire. 15:08.1 with 600 to go at the end of 11 laps (82.4). (15:49.9 with 1 to go). 16:29.5 at the end of 12 laps (81.4). Claire unofficially 17:09.09 officially. (79.2 final lap). Good job by the San Pasqual star who had to run the last mile or so by herself.

Men's Pole Vault

Tommy Skipper, the Oregon prep star who set a National HS Record of 18-03 last week at the Golden West, looked super once again. His "big poles" did not get to Sacramento for the GWI, so all looked for some big things here. Tommy opened at 17-00.75 with a first trial clearance, with Gable Baldwin (unat) and Chase Shealy (Carolina ext) joining in there with clearances. Tommy after his 5.20m clearance was over 5.25 on his second trial, passed at 5.30, passed at 5.35, and cleared 5.50 (18-00.5). He had fine attempts at 5.60 (18-04.25) but could not clear in an attempt to raise his own National Prep Record.

Women's Pole Vault

A small field of eight opened at a pretty high height--3.65 (11-11.75)! Monica Pacas (Sky Jumpers/Atascadero HS) was over there, but could not make it over the next 3.75m (12-03.5) height, and the Atascadero star settled for 6th overall. Kira Costa, another new National Pole Vault record holder off her 13-08.5 last week at the Golden West, was clean with 3.65 (11-11.75 - 12-03.5 - 12-07.5 and 12-11.5 first attempt clearances. Julene Bailey (Idaho prep) joined Kira through 12-11.5, with Costa unable to make it this day over 13-03.5 (4.05) with Bailey clearning there on her third attempt, then surprising with a 4.13 (13-06.5) clearance. Bailey had three efforts at 4.20 (13-08.5) but could not clear.

Men's Long Jump

Ronald Hill (former Walnut HS now Mt. SAC) started this day with two fouls, but had a good third jump to trail only Greig Cryer (South Carolina0 24-01.75w (+2.9) after the trials. Demetrius Westbrooks (Unat/Morse HS, SD) was 6.98w (+2.3) in qualifying, with Michael Strong (Fairfield) 6.81w (+3.4), Martin Boston (Unat/J Logan HS/Wash St Univ) 6.65w (+4.2) and Rashaad Nunnaly (Sheldon, Elk Grove) three fouls early on. Hill exploded first in the Finals, out to 7.53m (24-08.5) (0 wind), with Martin Boston 7.43 (24-04.5) (wind +1.2) for the 1-2 marks of the day.

Girls Long Jump

Very good group battled. Renee Williams (EYODC/Skyline HS) was in second after the first round 6.02 (+1.3) to 5.98w (+3.1) (Kemesha Whitmire (South Carolina) leader). Ohio prep Tianna Madison was out to 6.18w (20-03.5) (+4.1) on her second jump, with Williams responding with a 6.16w (20-02.5w (+2.7) on her third to still stay in second, with the first two jumps holding for the competition. Gayle Hunter (West Valley TC/North HS, Riv) was 19-08 (+1.4) for 5th, with Ciara McMillan (Alex Van Dyke TC/Wood HS, Vacaville) 19-00.75 (+1.7) for 7th, and Michelle Sanford (Irvine Cougars/Woodbridge HS) 18-03.25w (+2.6).

Men's Hammer Throw

With another of those "Junior Implements" (between HS and Olympic size and weight), Noah Bryant (USC) ended up 12th here at 183-04, with Eugene Bradley (UCSB) 15th at 179-07.

Women's Shot Put

Some very good putting here. Michelle Carter (Texas Throwers), National Prep Record Holder, was 52-08 (16.05) on her second throw to win, but Elizabeth Podominick (Unat/Minnesota Prep) a big personal best 52-04.75 (15.97) (#8 Prep All-time) on her fifth throw. Kamaiya Warren (UCLA/St. Mary's HS) was 51-05.5 in third, with Jessica Pressley (Unat/Laguna Creek) a fine 51-01.75 in fourth! Megan Howard (Unat/Arroyo Grande HS) was a fine 48-06 in 8th.

Men's Javelin -

Brian Blutreich, former Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo) HS and UCLA star who prepped under Coach Art Venegas there, has a super University of North Carolina weight program. Here it was Justin Ryncavage who won this event by nine feet at 211-01.
